The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder provides many fun and exciting activities for the children which help to promote learning in all areas.  There is an extensive range of stimulating resources for children to independently access.  The childminder has a secure knowledge of the individual children's needs and abilities. She uses this to further promote their development and does so to good effect.  Children display very good communication and language skills and are developing above the expected level for their age.  Children are happy and secure and share a close relationship with the childminder.  The childminder helps to prepare children for their move to school by positively encouraging and promoting independence. Children are also encouraged to recognise and write their own name.  The childminder has a secure understanding of how to keep children safe and of the procedure to follow if a child was harmed in any way.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder effectively self-evaluates the service she provides by taking into account the ideas and opinions of parents and children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children enjoy listening to stories, but the childminder does not consistently use these opportunities to develop their awareness of letter sounds.  The childminder helps children to learn to stay safe but does not practise emergency evacuation procedures with them regularly to consolidate their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance opportunities for children to explore letter sounds  increase opportunities for children to consolidate their awareness of what to do in an emergency, for example, by practising emergency evacuation procedures more frequently.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector engaged with the child present at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed play activities both indoors and outdoors.  The inspector observed the lunch-time routine.  The inspector sampled various documents, including relevant policies and procedures, children's learning records and relevant permission and consent forms.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder uses accurate and evaluative observations of children's learning to ensure their all-round development. She effectively challenges children by asking them questions which require them to think of different answers. The childminder does this to extend children's learning as appropriate. The childminder consistently promotes counting, communication and children's understanding of the world around them. This is done, for example, through her positive interactions with children during imaginative role play. At times however, the childminder does not take the opportunity to promote children's awareness of letter sounds. The childminder works closely with parents to ensure continuity of care and parents value the childminder's open relationship with them. Together the childminder and parents identify any areas where children might need additional support. The childminder values diversity and encourages children to engage in

activities that celebrate different festivals and cultures.

p.3

good

The childminder is aware of the children's needs and consistently ensures their well-being. For example, she regularly ensures that children are protected from the sun when playing outdoors in hot weather. She actively encourages children to independently manage their personal hygiene needs. As a result, children engage in good hygiene routines. The childminder is a good role-model and effectively promotes good behaviour and manners throughout the day. Children are encouraged to actively explore the outdoor environment and positively benefit from the exercise this promotes. The childminder ensures that children are safe by regularly risk assessing their environment. The childminder talks to the children about keeping safe and what to do in an emergency. She undertakes emergency evacuation practices to familiarise children with the procedure, but these are irregular. The childminder implements a variety of relevant policies and procedures to

promote children's safety and well-being. These are shared effectively with the parents.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder actively reflects on the activities she provides for the children and takes into consideration the benefit and their enjoyment of the activity. As a result children are interested and motivated to participate in all activities. The childminder visits the other settings children attend and parents are regularly asked to contribute to their children's learning records. This gives the childminder a good awareness of the children's experiences and achievements. Parents regularly provide verbal feedback to the childminder about the service she provides. She effectively takes these views into account when identifying her strengths and weaknesses and when implementing changes.
