p.1

This provision is good

 The children show they are happy and settled with the childminder. This is because they have a positive relationship with her. They are familiar with routines and the good range of well maintained toys and equipment.  The quality of teaching is good. The childminder includes lots of references to letter shapes and numbers as children play. Therefore, children become proficient in identifying them in the toys and activities they use.  The children are well behaved. They learn the childminder's rules about sharing as they play together using board games and puzzles.  The childminder provides lots of challenging physical activities in the garden. Children enjoy using the different climbing frames and the small trampoline, which helps to develop their physical skills. They are encouraged to be active.  The childminder enters her accurate observation and assessments of children's progress on to an online system. She effectively identifies children's next steps and uses these to

plan activities for each individual child. Parents log onto the online system confidentiality to add comments and report on their child's learning at home.  The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and maintains all her paperwork in line with requirements.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children use crayons and paper to practise making marks indoors. However, the childminder does not always provide similar equipment outdoors to extend their early literacy skills further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 increase opportunities for children to practise mark making in the garden.

Inspection activities

 The inspector sampled a variety of paperwork including the childminder's safeguarding policy and children's progress records.  The inspector observed the interaction between the childminder and the children, and with the co-childminder, indoors and outdoors.  The childminder talked to the childminder and her co-childminder about how they share the care of the children.

who attend. This is good

Children competently use magnifying glasses to observe nature in the garden. They look for spider's webs and bugs, and talk to the childminder about how insects live. They also use them indoors to magnify different objects. During quiet times children select their own books and look at the pictures. They listen enthralled to stories read by the childminder and wanted to join in with storytelling. The childminder has good procedures to help children be emotionally and physically ready for changes, such as the move to pre-school and school. The childminder talks to children about pre-school and making new friends and the different toys they will use. She ensures children are competent in caring for themselves and putting on their coats and shoes. The childminder is effective in helping children achieve the skills they need for future learning.

p.3

good

The childminder provides parents with a wide selection of information about how she operates her setting. She recognises the value of working closely with parents. For example, she helps parents complete the 'all about me' information record when they register their children. She consults with them as she prepares their child's progress check at two years and provides them with a thorough report. The childminder completes regular safety checks of her premises and toys, as well as checking the safety of the places they visit. The childminder uses safety equipment effectively throughout her home and gives safety a high priority. She also ensures children eat healthily by providing lots of nutritious food to meet their individual dietary needs. This includes providing different options according to religious and parental preferences.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibility to protect children. She works closely with her co-childminder to ensure they supervise children effectively at all times. The childminder has completed online child protection training to update and improve her understanding of what to do if she has concerns about a child in her care. The childminder has a high regard for children's well-being. She has good procedures for working effectively with other health and education professionals. The childminder carries out an effective evaluation of her setting in conjunction with her co- childminder. In addition, she uses comments from parents and children to identify her strengths and any areas for improvement. The childminder has attended positive behaviour training. Children benefit because the childminder uses effective strategies to support them, such as to take turns.
