The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The provider has failed to notify Ofsted of changes to the committee and therefore, the required suitability checks are not in place. Consequently, this does not ensure that children's well-being is promoted to a good level.  Children do not always have appropriate equipment to use at snack time, to ensure that they develop a very good awareness of suitable social skills when eating.  Children's safety is not fully maximised. Staff do not keep a record of emergency evacuation drills, so that procedure can be revised if needed.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Staff have strong bonds with children and know the children well, through effective sharing of information with parents and other professionals. This enables staff to plan for the next steps in children's learning, helping children to make good progress and complementing their learning at school.  Staff manage behaviour very well and use information obtained from training to develop their practices. They promote sharing and taking turns and encourage older children to support younger ones during activities. This promotes a very harmonious environment.  Children are confident and enjoy the very stimulating and vibrant environment. There is a wide range of resources for indoors and outdoors, which are easily accessible. Staff engage in children's play and promote children's language skills effectively through the use of open-ended questions. This helps to ensure children are ready for school.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance children's social skills further, for example, by providing appropriate equipment such as plates and/or bowls for them to eat their food from at snack time  extend the procedures for emergency evacuations, for example, by keeping a record of any fire drills practised, in order that children's safety is promoted to a higher level.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 inform Ofsted of the name, date of birth, address and telephone number of any partner, director, senior officer or other member of the governing body (compulsory part of the Childcare Register).

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector conducted a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of staff working with children.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers spoken to on the day and from information and feedback included in parental surveys.  The inspector observed activities and discussed children's learning and development with staff.  The inspector had a discussion with the manager about their understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and self-evaluation, and had discussions with other staff members about their roles and responsibilities, including safeguarding.  The inspector looked at a selection of policies and procedures which included safeguarding and a range of other documentation.

p.2

who attend. This is good

Staff work closely with the class teachers, discussing children's progress and sharing observations of children's learning in the club. This ensures continuity in children's learning. Children thoroughly enjoy their time at the club. They show good levels of enthusiasm when helping to mix the ingredients for the play dough. Staff encourage children to count the cups of flour that they put into the bowl, to develop their mathematical skills. Staff develop children's thinking and language skills as they ask them 'What has happened to the mixture?' Children are confident to answer, saying 'it has gone gooey'. Children's independence is promoted well by staff as they encourage children to manage their own self-care. Children have lots of fun playing outside. They balance confidently on bikes and engage in imaginative play well together. Staff enthusiastically join in as they pretend to go to buy an ice cream from the van. Staff fully involve parents

in their children's learning, discussing their child's progress at the club on a daily basis.

p.3

requires improvement

Children's well-being is compromised because appropriate action has not been taken to notify Ofsted of changes to the registered body. The key-person system is used effectively to support children's individual needs, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Staff follow guidance from other professionals to help make sure that children's well-being and progress are supported appropriately. Staff have positive relationships with children, developed through the clear settling-in procedures. This promotes children's confidence to engage in activities. Children develop a healthy lifestyle through the good hygiene routines implemented and the healthy snacks provided. They sit well together to eat their fruit, but do not develop their social skills further, as they do not have resources such as plates to eat their food off. Staff raise children's awareness of safety by explaining to children that they should not get too close to the microwave, when

they are making the play dough. They also practise fire drills with the children. However, they do not record these or reflect on them, to improve children's safety further.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The provider has committed an offence as Ofsted has not been notified of changes to the committee which took place in October 2014. Therefore, the required suitability checks have not been completed, which poses a potential risk to children's safety. However, this is minimised because members of the committee do not work directly with children. Staff have a clear understanding of child protection procedures and how to refer any concerns. This helps to protect children from harm. There is a good level of qualified staff, which results in them having a good understanding of how to promote children's learning. The managers monitor staff practices through regular observations of their teaching skills and provide feedback to all staff during supervision sessions. Staff work together to evaluate what is offered and gather information from parents and children to improve the provision. Comments from parents and children are very positive about the club.
