The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder provides an exceptional range of innovative and high quality learning experiences that children thoroughly enjoy. As a result, children are highly motivated, eager to join in and find things out for themselves.  All children, including those who speak English as an additional language, make rapid progress in their learning and communication skills.  Children form strong attachments to the childminder as she is kind, caring and attentive.  Children adopt good hygiene practices and learn to see to their own personal needs. They become very independent and confident.  The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibility if she has a child protection concern. This helps safeguard children's welfare.  The childminder works effectively in partnership with parents as she actively involves them in the learning and assessment process. There is an extremely good two-way

exchange of information that contributes to continuity in children's care, and learning at home and in the setting.  The childminder shows a strong capacity to continue to improve the quality of her provision and outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes the childminder does not reinforce safety messages fully to help promote children's increasing awareness of how to stay safe. For example, she occasionally misses opportunities to make sure children understand how to use cutlery safely.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 strengthen children's understanding of how to manage risks and keep themselves safe.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities indoors and in the garden.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from letters seen at the inspection and the childminder's questionnaires.  The inspector looked at the childminder's self-evaluation form and improvement plans.  The inspector discussed childcare practices with the childminder.

p.2

who attend. This is outstanding

The childminder gets to know every child extremely well. She focuses sharply on using her observations and assessments to plan exciting learning experiences. These activities build on children's existing knowledge and help them develop new skills. The childminder prepares children exceptionally well for the move to school. The childminder's teaching is outstanding. She shows her expertise in the way she questions children to extend their thinking and learning as they play. For example, she asked children what was happening when investigating the coloured beads in the water tray. They talked together about how the clear beads became 'invisible' in the water. The childminder gives excellent support to children so that they make significant progress in all areas of learning. During a well- resourced shop activity, the childminder reinforced letter sounds and counting with children. Children talked about the initial letters in the open and closed shop sign. They

named other words beginning with the same letters. Children confidently use technology and show an interest in the world around them. They spontaneously extended a carefully planned magnetic activity by continuing to explore other objects around the home.

p.3

good

Children show they feel settled and secure in the welcoming and homely environment. There are plenty of pictures and posters to interest and engage children. The childminder takes children to local groups to develop their confidence with other adults and children. As a result, children are developing good social skills. They learn to help others and share resources. The childminder teaches children the importance of healthy lifestyles. Children develop a good understanding of healthy eating. They enjoy many opportunities to play outside and enjoy exercise. This contributes to children's good health and well-being.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder implements the safeguarding and welfare requirements competently. She uses the required documentation effectively, which contributes to children's well-being. The childminder monitors and evaluates her educational programmes and childcare practices effectively. She adapts her practices to meet children's individual needs. The childminder attends training to maintain her professional development and improve children's experiences. For example, following a recent course, she implemented a language-monitoring document. This enables her to find out from parents if children are at their expected level in their home languages. She can then secure additional support for them if needed.
