This inspection: Inadequate 4

The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder does not hold a current, relevant first-aid qualification.  Risk assessment processes are not sufficiently effective to ensure children are safeguarded and to ensure their safety is promoted fully.  The childminder does not have a good enough awareness of the progress check for children aged between two and three years to assess their progress and keep parents fully informed of their children's development.  Self-evaluation processes are not robust enough to demonstrate how the childminder evaluates her own practice and in order to help make improvements.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children build strong relationships with the childminder due to her warm, caring nature.  Children have good self-care skills because the childminder supports them to be independent and do things for themselves.  The childminder offers lots of praise and encouragement, which builds children's confidence and promotes their self-esteem.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 attend an appropriate paediatric first-aid training course to ensure knowledge of paediatric first aid is updated and a current certificate is held  take all reasonable steps to remove, minimise and manage risks and hazards to protect children's safety and welfare, in particular the risks associated with the unlocked front door, cleaning products not being appropriately stored, the trailing heater wire and the fallen fence panel  implement the required progress check for children aged between two and three years and provide parents with a short written summary of their child's development in the prime areas.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve the self-evaluation process so it is effective in monitoring practice and clearly highlights all areas for improvement

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure that an appropriate first-aid qualification is held (compulsory part of the Childcare Register)  take all reasonable steps to remove, minimise and manage risks and hazards to protect children's safety and welfare, in particular the risks associated with the unlocked front door, cleaning products not being appropriately stored, the trailing heater wire and the fallen fence panel (compulsory part of the Childcare Register)  ensure that an appropriate first-aid qualification is held (voluntary part of the Childcare Register)  take all reasonable steps to remove, minimise and manage risks and hazards to protect children's safety and welfare, in particular the risks associated with the unlocked front door, cleaning products not being appropriately stored, the trailing heater wire and the fallen fence panel (voluntary part of the Childcare Register).

Inspection activities

 The inspector undertook a tour of the premises.  The inspector observed children's play and adult and child interactions.  The inspector and childminder undertook a joint observation of an activity.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation.  The inspector checked evidence of suitability of adults living on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children on the day of inspection.

p.3

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder has a suitable knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She observes children while they play and plans activities based on children's interests. The childminder supports children's communication and language development by providing an ongoing commentary about what children are seeing and doing. Children enjoy sharing favourite stories, while sitting comfortably with the childminder and their peers on the sofa. The childminder reads with expression and pauses to encourage children to join in. As a result, children anticipate key events and join in with key phrases. The childminder uses props effectively to support and embed children's learning. For example, children pretend to be bears and climb on the small, medium-sized and big chair. Children learn the skills they need for school as the childminder supports them to write their own names and count as they play. Parents are welcomed into the childminder's home and basic two-

way information about children's care is shared verbally and through the use of a daily diary. However, the childminder does not have an awareness of the progress check for children aged between two and three years. This means the childminder does not share information with parents about children's progress in the prime areas of learning.

p.4

inadequate

The childminder has failed to minimise some risks in the environment, which means children's safety and well-being are compromised. Children show they are settled and happy. The childminder sets out age-appropriate resources that meet children's needs and interests. The childminder encourages children to use appropriate hygiene practices, such as washing their hands after visiting the bathroom and before eating. She takes children on outings to the local park. However, she has failed to update her paediatric first-aid training, which does not promote children's good health and well-being. Children are supported to share and take turns and help to tidy up the toys after they have finished with them. This helps them to be emotionally ready for school.

p.4

provision is inadequate

The childminder has failed to meet a number of welfare requirements. This means she does not ensure children are adequately safeguarded. For example, on the day of inspection cleaning equipment was not locked away out of children's reach and a wire from a heater was causing a trip hazard. The front door is also kept unlocked and a fence panel in the back garden has fallen down and has not yet been fixed. This means the premises are easily accessible. The childminder does not monitor the quality of her teaching sufficiently enough to highlight clear priorities for improvement. As a result, the childminder does not complete the progress check for children aged between two and three years and share this information with parents. The childminder makes links with the local school and nursery to ensure a two-way sharing of information.
