Previous inspection: Satisfactory 3 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not ensure that children have easy and constant access to activities and resources. This means they cannot always extend their play opportunities and make choices in how they spend their time.  Children have limited opportunities to learn more about the natural world around them. This is because the childminder does not make effective use of her balcony area to enhance children's learning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder promotes children's speaking and listening skills in everyday play, which supports their communication and language skills.  The childminder uses freshly prepared foods, which helps children learn more about healthy eating.  The childminder gives children's well-being and welfare appropriate attention and, therefore, they settle well and bond with her.  The childminder has a sound knowledge of safeguarding. This means that correct procedures are in place if there are any concerns about a child in her care.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

 ensure the organisation and the availability of activities and resources allows children to make better choices and extend their play.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of the outdoor space, to enhance children's understanding of the world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play and held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation kept by the childminder, including those relating to safeguarding.

p.2

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder has a range of activities to help promote children's development in all areas of learning. However, many resources are not easily accessible for children to make choices, for example, role-play resources to help children to re-enact their family experiences and writing and creative materials. This reduces the opportunities for them to extend their play. The childminder spends most of her time playing with children and supporting their skills. She reads to the children and makes books readily available for them to explore alone. Activities, such as using interactive toys, help children learn to count and recognise shapes and colours. Technology and educational programmes further assist in helping children's learning in preparation for the move to nursery or school. Children go out most days, for example, to local parks. However, the childminder does not make the most of her balcony, for instance, to provide opportunities for children to

explore planting and growing. The childminder regularly exchanges information with parents about children's achievements and their day. This helps to promote consistency in children's learning and development.

p.3

requires improvement

The childminder interacts well with the children and they feel valued by her. She listens to what they say and shows interest in what they enjoy doing. The limited choice in what children can do means that the childminder does not consistently promote their independence in all areas. The childminder ensures her home and other environments children use are safe and secure. Children learn to wash their hands without prompting, and feed themselves. The childminder promotes children's self-help skills appropriately. She visits local toddler groups to help children learn to respect, share and help each other. This promotes their personal, social and emotional development.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder is organised and follows sound record-keeping procedures. This means she has all the relevant information to help to ensure children's welfare. The childminder has developed useful partnerships with parents, which helps to promote consistency in children's care and learning. The childminder observes and assesses children's development and plans appropriately for their next steps in learning. This enables her to monitor children's progress and highlight any potential gaps in their learning and development. The childminder's qualification at level 3 helps her understand how children learn and develop. She evaluates her practice, although she has not addressed all of the recommendations raised at her last inspection. For example, she has not effectively improved the organisation of play equipment, so that children can easily make choices.
