All staff members, including the Registered Manager have benefited from an annual appraisal, which has taken into account young people’s views about the individual team members. The whole staff team now receive supervision from suitably trained supervisors. This is because newly appointed team leaders have completed supervision training. Young people have remained settled in the home and are each making excellent progress given their individual starting points. Educationally young people are engaged in their placements and making good progress, each working towards specific achievements. For one young person, this means she has undertaken GCSE examinations one year ahead of her peer group. One young person commented, ‘I really enjoy going to school, before I came here I would not go but now I am doing really well in school.’

Young people are central to the development of the home; they have a very clear 3 of 5 voice there and drive change and improvement. Since the last inspection they have as a group negotiated agreement with the staff team to adopt a cat from a local animal sanctuary. Young people have assumed full responsibility for caring for the cat and have shown maturity and commitment to ensuring the cat’s welfare. One young person commented,’ I really feel part of the home and we decide what we are doing, like getting the cat.’ Staff ensure that young people are safe by working with them to recognise and share their feelings and any triggers for risk taking behaviour. As a result of these discussions risk management plans are developed. The plans and developed strategies are regularly reviewed and monitored by staff in the home and in consultation with the in-house clinical psychologist. The Registered Manager responds efficiently to emerging training needs to ensure young people’s needs are

met. This has resulted in self-harm and ligature training for the whole staff team.
p.3
This inspection
The Registered Manager and staff team work together effectively with other agencies to ensure young people have access to the services they need. As a result placing social workers comment on the quality of care in the home, ‘the quality of care is excellent and the staff team react swiftly to any incidents.’ Young people have continued to develop their independent living skills at a pace which they can individually manage, for some this has meant budgeting, shopping and preparing all of their own meals. This means they are better prepared for moving on from the home and living independently and they also gain a sense of achievement and self-confidence.
