The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Assessment records do not accurately reflect children's achievements across all the areas of learning and where they may need additional support.  Learning experiences are not always shaped by the childminder to meet individual children's development needs.  The self evaluation process used by the childminder does not link to relevant priorities or inform challenging targets for improvement.  The safeguarding policy and procedure does not cover the use of mobile phones and cameras in the setting.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Good support is provided for children to develop independence and confidence.  Children form positive relationships. They show sensitivity to others' needs and feelings.  A warm, welcoming and friendly environment with a range of interesting resources both inside and outside provides children with varied play and learning activities.  Children are cared for in safe and secure premises.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

 make sure the safeguarding policy and procedures cover the use of mobile phones and cameras in the setting  record accurate assessment of children's achievements to inform their next steps, linked to their individual learning requirements  guide children's development based on observations and their emerging needs during play and activities.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities inside the house and outside in the garden.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from discussion on the day of the inspection and written information.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder obtains information about children’s achievements from the outset to work towards developing their skills and helping them make progress. However, assessments do not reflect the children’s abilities accurately in all areas and the childminder does not always support children effectively during their play to make sure their individual next steps are achieved. A broad range of activities are planned which link to children’s interests. Children enjoy initiating games with small play figures to create a zoo; taking part in imaginary play in the garden or a game of snap to match different pictures. The parents and childminder share information to promote children’s care and develop their learning. Parents have provided positive feedback to Ofsted about the childminder’s provision.

p.3

good

Children are cared for in a warm, friendly, home-from-home environment. The premises are secure and there is a range of interesting toys and resources available to encourage play and learning, both inside and outside of the home. Children form positive relationships and behave well towards each other, showing consideration and care. Their care needs are met and they are confident and independent. Children learn about the benefits of healthy eating and following hygienic practices. They enjoy playing in the open air and learning to co-ordinate their bodies to manage large or small play equipment. Children develop personal skills to manage their own needs and prepare them for school.

p.3

provision requires improvement

Children's welfare is generally safeguarded because the childminder has a sound knowledge and understanding of child protection; the steps to take if she has any concerns about a child in her care or if an allegation is made against her and some understanding of the potential risks to children from the internet. However, the policy and procedure does not cover the use of mobile phones and photographic equipment to minimise any possible risk from these. The childminder considers different ways in which she can improve her practice, but it is not specifically focussed enough to benefit the individual children attending and highlight the most relevant areas of improvement and training. Records of assessment are not accurate in all areas. The activities for the children cover all the areas of learning in an interesting and balanced way. The childminder is attentive and enjoys the children's company. She joins in with their play and plans

activities based on the children's interests and individual choices.
