p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder is a skilled teacher of mathematics and maximises the opportunities in the daily routines and during play to develop children's knowledge and understanding of number, shape and colour. As a result, children make particularly good progress in this area.  The childminder organises toys and play equipment in a stimulating and accessible way. Pictures on toy boxes mean that children know what is inside. This helps them to make choices in what they would like to play with and follow their ever-changing interests and ideas.  The childminder has built good relationships with children and makes them feel welcome in her home. She meets children's emotional and physical needs well so they are very happy and content in her care.  The childminder is motivated to expand her knowledge and skills. She has established useful networks to find good practice to emulate. She attends regular training courses.

p.1

This provision is good

She uses her new understanding to support her ongoing self-evaluation and improves her teaching. This has a positive outcome on improving outcomes for children who now make good progress from their starting points on entry.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses some opportunities during meal and snack times to promote children's independence and physical skills as well as possible, such as by involving them in food preparation.  The childminder is not fully successful in extending children's communication, language and social skills, such as at mealtimes and during table-top play activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the meal and snack-time routines to build on children's physical and independent skills  improve the organisation of table-top play activities and meal times to make them more social times for children and provide increased opportunities for them to develop their communication and language skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 Discussions took place with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interactions with children in all areas of the house that are used for minding.  The inspector looked at documentation including a sample of children's records, planning and records, and checked the suitability of the childminder and household members.  The inspector took account of the views of children and the childminder spoken to on the day of the inspection, of parents through documentation and of the provider's self- evaluation.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder has good procedures for settling-in children quickly. She works closely with parents and encourages them to share what they know about their children's interests and needs. The childminder observes and assesses children carefully. These checks enable her to see if children are making good progress and to identify what they need to learn next. The childminder plans and provides a variety of activities based on children's interests that meet their learning needs and that cover all areas of learning effectively. The childminder is skilled at teaching children new vocabulary and in extending their communication and language skills. However, some parts of her routines are less conducive to encouraging children to chat. This is due to the positioning of highchairs and tables which restricts such interactions between children and the childminder. Therefore, there are missed opportunities for children to make rapid progress. The childminder keeps

parents well informed about their children's progress. There is good two-way sharing of information. This exchange keeps the childminder updated on children's latest achievements at home. She shares learning priorities with parents.

p.3

good

The childminder extends children's learning by taking them on exciting outings to places such as country parks. She keeps children safe on such outings and provides a safe home environment for their play. The childminder successfully prepares children for moving on to schools and other settings. The childminder safeguards children effectively, including promoting children's health and hygiene well.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities and meets requirements to a good standard. She has up-to-date knowledge of first aid and child protection. The childminder has worked hard to lift her provision to a good standard since the previous inspection. She has addressed all recommendations set then in full, which has improved provision for children. For example, partnerships are now strong which has strengthened the level of information the childminder obtains from parents.
