The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder is not regularly checking that outdoor equipment is safe for children to play with.  The childminder does not have a sound understanding of the procedures to follow in the event of an allegation against herself or a member of her household.  The childminder has not yet updated her knowledge on the new legislation regarding allergens in food.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has a good understanding of the prime and specific areas of learning. As a result, activities are planned, purposeful and offer sufficient challenge to meet children's next steps in their learning.  Children are happy and settled in this homely environment. They have formed strong attachments with the childminder, which supports their emotional well-being and self- confidence.  The childminder has built very effective partnerships with parents, which helps to ensure a consistent approach to the children's care. Parents receive regular information and opportunities to share information on the children's learning and development.

 ensure that the equipment used for the purposes of the childcare is safe and suitable for the children (compulsory part of the Childcare Register)  keep and implement a written statement of procedures to be followed for the protection of children, which includes a procedure to follow in the event of allegations being made against the childminder or members of her household (compulsory part of the Childcare Register)  ensure that the equipment used for the purposes of the childcare is safe and suitable for the children (voluntary part of the Childcare Register)  keep and implement a written statement of procedures to be followed for the protection of children, which includes a procedure to follow in the event of allegations being made against the childminder or members of her household (voluntary part of the Childcare Register).

who attend. This is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the learning and development requirements. She provides a range of resources and activities to promote children's individual development across the seven areas of learning. For example, children enjoy exploring different media during a creative activity of gluing and sticking to make caterpillars. They enjoy the sensory experience of scrunching up the paper and develop their physical skills through spreading the glue. The childminder extends their learning by asking lots of questions. This promotes their thinking skills and encourages language and communication development. Starting points in learning are gathered from parents prior to children starting, enabling targeted planning to commence from the onset of care. Observation and assessment systems are embedded and enable the childminder to have an accurate picture of children's next steps. Consequently, children are gaining good skills

and experiences to support them in their next stage of learning.

p.4

requires improvement

Risk assessments are not used effectively enough to ensure all resources and equipment are safe. A number of broken items in the garden, such as broken plastic tables and a milk crate could pose hazards to children. The childminder is addressing recommendations from her last inspection to further develop her outdoor environment with more natural resources and now has tyres and drain pipes to extend learning experiences. The childminder promotes effective hygiene procedures and children are able to develop their independence in a variety of ways. For example, they are encouraged to clean their hands before eating and to tidy away toys. Children are encouraged to eat healthily and the childminder introduces new fruit and vegetables for them to taste, to support their emerging understanding of healthy lifestyles. The childminder has not yet updated her knowledge on the changes in legislation regarding what allergens are in food and the

requirement to provide this information to further promote children's well-being.

p.4

provision requires improvement

The childminder has made improvements since her last inspection. She now understands her safeguarding responsibilities and ensures that children are never left unattended, in order to keep them safe from harm. She understands the procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child's welfare and she can recognise the signs and symptoms of possible abuse and neglect. However, she is not aware of the role of the Local Authority Designated Officer or the procedure to follow in the event of any allegations being raised against her or her family. The childminder is reflecting on her practice, in order to further improve her provision to benefit the children. She has a formal childcare qualification, which has a good impact on the learning experiences that she offers children. She also demonstrates a commitment to ongoing training to further her professional development.
