This provision is good
Staff are skilful at adapting activities to meet the individual needs of the children. This ensures each child is challenged and engaged in their learning, helping them to make good progress. Children's emotional development is very well fostered. Staff are attentive and the high staff-to-children ratio ensures children receive high levels of adult attention throughout the sessions. Teamwork is a strength in the pre-school. The staff show initiative in adapting the sessions and making positive changes that support children's learning on a daily basis. Parents spoken to during the inspection are delighted with the high levels of communication from the staff. They feel fully involved in their children's educational progress and development. The manager is committed to providing a good quality of care and education for the children. Evaluation and reflection are embedded in the day-to-day running of the

provision, and ensure any improvements are of benefit to the children's welfare and development.

It is not yet outstanding because:
There are times when the organisation of routine times, such as snack time, lacks purpose or a positive impact on children's development.

Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities in the main playroom and the outside learning environment. The inspector conducted a joint observation with the manager. The inspector held a meeting with the manager. The inspector looked at children's assessment records, planning documentation and a selection of policies and procedures. The inspector checked evidence of suitability and qualifications of practitioners working with children, the setting's self-evaluation form and improvement plan. The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers spoken to on the day and interacted with children throughout the inspection.

who attend. This is good
The staff plan and provide a wide range of interesting activities based on the children's interests. For example, they made a pirate ship and the children were able to provide ideas on how to extend the activity further. The children progress well, as staff are skilled at adapting activities dependent on the child's ability. This ensures that all children are challenged and their learning is enhanced. For example, staff ask children to count out objects, but for older children they ask for a final total and then ask how many more they need to reach that amount. Whilst reading a story, staff ask a range of questions to enable the children to guess what happens next, recall what has previously happened and talk about what they can see in the pictures. This supports their communication, language and literacy skills. There is an emphasis on mark making, using a range of different materials. Children are supported to hold their pencils correctly and older children begin to

form recognisable letters and shapes in readiness for going to school. In general, the organisation of the session flows well. However, the organisation of some routines, particularly snack time, is not as well considered. Consequently, children wait for prolonged periods and there is little focus on learning. Assessment is focused on children's individual next steps and ensures all children make good progress.

good
High ratios of staff to children ensure that the children are supervised well and kept safe. All staff attend child-protection training and are knowledgeable about how to safeguard children's welfare. The key-person system is extremely effective in ensuring that children are able to make secure emotional attachments. The staff are patient and kind and support the children to make good choices for themselves. Consequently, they behave well and learn to be fair. Their independence is fostered well as, for example, they are encouraged to pour their own drinks and put on their own shoes. The children learn about the importance of healthy lifestyles, through the nutritious snacks provided and discussions about food that is good for them. They play outside regularly and develop physical skills as they ride bikes, climb, slide and catch balls.

provision is good
Robust recruitment procedures implemented by the manager ensure that staff are not only suitable to work with children but are also highly-skilled practitioners. They are well qualified and attend ongoing training, which has a very positive impact on children's educational development and their overall welfare. The staff are an integral part of the management of this small pre-school and are actively involved in the effective evaluation programmes. Therefore, any changes stem from reflective practice, and staff work together to implement them consistently. Parents are valued as a driving factor in the education of their children. Partnership working is embedded and successful in supporting children's development. Children's progress is constantly monitored. The planning is specific to each child's needs.
