Young people make good progress in the development of their independence skills. This allows them to take on responsibility for themselves in preparation to transition into adult life. Young people carry out chores, prepare meals and develop their budgeting skills. In keyworker sessions, staff support young people to identify their goals and monitor their progress in achieving further independence. Staff have introduced a new independence programme to evidence young peoples’ abilities and reward their progress with certificates and accreditation. This increases young peoples’ self-confidence and self-esteem. Young people are fully involved in their transition planning. Staff support young people to make their views known at their reviews and planning meetings. Young people visit prospective placements and staff share information with new placements to promote a smooth and successful transition.

p.2

This inspection

Young people are active and take part in a variety of activities including rugby, karate and scouts. Through these activities, young people develop their interests and widen their social circles. Staff actively support young people’s education. They liaise closely with educational professionals to ensure young people access the support they require to improve their chance of reaching their education capability. Staff support young people who are not in full time education to access work placements to learn new skills and enhance their future opportunities in adulthood.

p.2

This inspection

Staff are responsive to young people’s feelings, allowing young people to trust staff and confide in them. This allows staff to assess what further support young people need including access to therapy to address psychological and emotional issues. The focus on young peoples’ feelings and emotional health enables them to develop a positive self-view and develop stronger emotional resilience. This results in improvements in their behaviour. Young people are confident in raising concerns with staff such as issues of bullying. Staff work closely with a local anti-bullying 3 of 6 scheme to ensure young people receive the correct advice and support. Staff successfully support young people who perpetrate bullying to address their anti- social behaviour and improve their interactions with others.

This inspection

Young people‘s health is promoted. They receive support to address unhealthy habits such as smoking and poor diet. Most young people are making healthier choices in what they eat. Staff liaise closely with medical professionals and children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to ensure young people attend their appointments and their medical needs are regularly reviewed. Staff take appropriate action to raise concerns regarding the welfare of young people with the local safeguarding team. This ensures the appropriate professionals can take the necessary actions to keep young people safe.

p.3

This inspection

As a result of the previous inspection, the Registered Manager has made improvements to the fire log to evaluate the effectiveness of each fire drill. This assists the Registered Manager in making improvements to the fire safety arrangements within the home. The home’s missing person policy now includes information on how staff can prevent young people from going missing. This supports staff in reducing such incidents. The Registered Manager now informs the appropriate authority of a young person’s admission to or departure from the service. The Registered Manager has taken action to check that therapists employed by the home are appropriately accredited with their professional organisations. This ensures suitably qualified adults care for young people.

p.3

This inspection

At the previous inspection, a recommendation was set to ensure that internal monitoring reports contain the views and opinions of the young people. However, these reports still lack formal consultation with young people within the home. This means the Registered Manager is not proactively seeking formal feedback to learn from and further progress the service.

p.3

This inspection

A requirement was set at the previous inspection to ensure the restraint log includes the details of the young person’s behaviour that required a physical intervention. However, the restraint log still does not meet regulatory requirements. For example, staff do not routinely record the methods used to avoid the use of restraint and the behaviour and reason for the use of a restraint. This hinders the Registered Manager’s ability to monitor patterns and trends of physical interventions and ensure young people are kept safe. 4 of 6
