p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder's very good observation of children during settling-in processes means she has a thorough understanding of their care needs.  Children develop strong bonds with the childminder and her assistant. They are highly confident and their self-esteem is extremely good. Babies and very young children show through their actions that they feel emotionally secure and content.  Children make very good progress in learning relative to their starting points. The childminder monitors children's learning and development very well. She makes detailed observations of children, which enable her to make precise and accurate assessments of their progress.  The childminder supports children's transitions onto the next stage in learning, such as to school, most effectively. She prepares them very well, emotionally and intellectually, for this change.  The childminder's understanding of child protection is good. She knows what she must

do to safeguard children, and implements her procedures in order to keep them safe.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not involve parents in establishing children's starting points across the areas of learning, other than where these link to care practices.  The childminder has had mixed success in developing professional partnerships with other settings that children also attend, so they can work consistently together.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop partnerships with parents further by involving them in establishing their children's starting points in relation to the areas of learning  explore ways of developing professional relationships with other early years settings that children also attend.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and her assistant engaged with children.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and children.  The inspector reviewed documentation, including safeguarding procedures, and the childminder's self-evaluation form.  The inspector reviewed the childminder's systems to monitor children's progress in learning.

p.2

who attend. This is good

Children thoroughly enjoy the good variety of activities and confidently make their own choices from the wide range of resources available to them. The childminder organises activities well to make sure older and younger children have equally good learning opportunities. For example, older children confidently used climbing equipment in the garden, stretching their muscles and learning to be safe; toddlers practised going up and down steps with the childminder, developing balance and co-ordination in movement. The childminder's good use of questions encourages children to think about and explain what they know. For example, children explained that toy cars of different colours still matched because the cars were the same shape. The childminder has a very good understanding of children's different learning styles and preferences, and prepares well for these. For example, children who showed little interest in paper and crayons immensely enjoyed

making patterns and marks in the sand using trucks and diggers.

p.3

good

The childminder has very good relationships with parents. They share information extremely well. This gives the childminder an excellent understanding of children's individual care needs so she can meet them. This prepares her well to meet the rapidly changing needs and routines of babies and very young children. The childminder has a very good understanding that children of similar ages and abilities will sometimes fall out with each other. When this occurs, she addresses any inappropriate behaviour extremely well, teaching children that their actions have consequences and affect others. The childminder is encouraging and praises children's achievements highly. For example, she congratulated a child for managing to put their boots on without help, rather than pointing out they were on the wrong feet. This encourages children's desire to be independent.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder monitors her practice well. She makes good use of resources to aid self- evaluation. For example, using an audit produced by the local authority to evaluate how inclusive her setting is for different ages and abilities. She focuses well on her own professional development, and that of her assistant, monitoring their practice, so that they provide children with good quality learning experiences. The childminder monitors the impact of any training on practice extremely well, and clearly identifies where children have benefited. For example, training relating to two-year-olds' development improved her understanding of the changes in children's thought processes, and why they become quickly frustrated. This led to reviewing expectations for this age group, such as, making sure they have time to process new information.
