The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder is warm and caring. She provides a homely, relaxed environment where children settle well and build strong attachments with the childminder.  The childminder attends regular ongoing training to enhance her understanding of children's development. This ensures her practice is constantly evolving to improve outcomes for children.  The childminder uses a range of questioning techniques, which encourages children to develop their language and communication skills.  The childminder encourages children's self-care skills, so that they become confident and independent, ready to go to school.  The childminder has a range of policies and procedures in place to effectively promote children's learning, safety and well-being.  The childminder provides opportunities for children to investigate and explore, so that they make good progress.  Parents make positive comments about the childminder and the activities she provides

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently encourage toddlers to practise their walking skills, so that they develop in confidence.  Some of the childminder's resources are not easily accessible to children, so that children are not always able to follow their interests.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen opportunities for toddlers to practise their walking skills, so they are able to explore the environment and develop confidence and independence  review the organisation of resources so that they are easily accessible and children are able to follow their interests throughout the day.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed interactions between the childminder and children in the lounge, and during mealtimes in the kitchen.  The inspector sampled the policies and procedures, children's development records and statutory documentation.  The inspector discussed the childminder's safeguarding procedures and her process for self-evaluation.  The inspector took into account the views of parents and children.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder provides a wide range of resources to promote all areas of children's learning and development. However, some are not easily accessible for all children to be able to follow their interests and become independent learners. The childminder taught children colours and numbers as they used their physical skills to work out how to fix pieces together and build a train track. This promotes their mathematical development and helps them think critically as they discovered solutions to problems for themselves. Toddlers became engrossed in a box of natural resources to promote their senses. They discovered the feeling of cotton wool, wood shavings, and conkers. Children laughed as they discovered the impact of blowing on a feather. This promotes children's physical development and understanding of the natural environment.

p.3

good

The childminder provides opportunities for children of different ages to play together and build friendships. She provides an inclusive environment which promotes children's personal, social and emotional development. The childminder encourages children to share and take turns. She talks to them about being kind to each other, so that children learn to manage their own behaviour. The childminder promotes children's independence and understanding of healthy lifestyles. She encourages children to feed themselves and help prepare meals. They eat nutritious food which promotes their well-being. Children have opportunities daily for outdoor play. They walk to school, visit local parks and have picnics locally. The childminder encourages toddlers to pull themselves up and walk. She promotes children's physical skills well. However, she does not further develop their confidence by, for example, supporting them to use the hallway and walk between rooms.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder shares information with parents about children's development and their daily routines. As a result, parents are informed of the activities in the setting and can extend children's learning at home. The childminder's home is safe, secure and hygienic for children. The childminder completes risk assessments, and all the required documentation is in place to promote children's safety and well-being. The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She follows Local Safeguarding Children Board guidelines and understands the procedures to follow to safeguard children. The childminder reflects on her practice and sets challenging targets to develop her setting and promote children's learning and development.
