p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn. She provides activities based on their existing interests and next steps in development. Therefore, children make good progress towards the early learning goals.  Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care, which helps them to develop as confident learners.  Children develop a good sense of security. The childminder knows them well and supervises them closely. She helps them to understand that what they do is valued, for example, by displaying their art work.  The childminder provides a safe and secure environment for children. She assesses possible risks at home and when she takes children out. Her knowledge of how to safeguard children is underpinned by effective policies and procedures. As a result, children are protected from harm.  The childminder has strong relationships with parents other early years providers that

children attend. Consequently, children's continuity of care and learning is promoted well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Opportunities for young children to develop their independence skills and make choices about what they want to play with are not fully maximised. This is because the layout of the environment does not fully encourage young children to initiate their own play.  The childminder does not always fully promote children's understanding of how positive hygiene practices contribute to their good health.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 explore ways of enhancing opportunities for young children to confidently initiate their own play ideas, for example, by providing a wider range of resources that they can access independently  enhance children's understanding of how positive hygiene practices contribute to their good health, for example, by helping them understand that they need to wash their hands before meals and snacks.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder and children during the inspection.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation.  The inspector looked at a sample of policies, documents and procedures.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and the suitability of other household members aged over 16 years.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She uses her observation and tracking records to plan appropriate learning activities that meet children's individual needs. The children have opportunities to take part in a wide range of activities. However, the organisation of the toys and activities does not always allow young children to freely access to a wide range of equipment. This means that opportunities for choice and independent learning are not always maximised. All children make good progress, based on their starting points. Consequently, they are well prepared for the next stage in their learning in readiness for school. The childminder promotes children's communication and language skills effectively. She talks with toddlers, about what they are doing, so that they learn to link words to actions. She helps children develop their understanding of space and shape when she supports them to fit shapes

into the shape sorter. In addition, she builds structures with them, using wooden blocks, so that children learn to construct and understand cause and effect. For example, children giggle as they knock the block tower down.

p.3

good

The childminder collects good information from parents, when children start at the setting, to ensure that their individual needs are well met. The childminder's strategies for managing children's behaviour are good. She responds positively to the children, acknowledging and praising their efforts. This promotes children's confidence and self- esteem. Overall, children develop a good understanding of how to keep themselves healthy and safe. However, the childminder does not fully promote children's understanding of how good hygiene practices, such as washing their hands before snacks, contributes to their good health. Children have opportunities to play outdoors regularly to exercise in the fresh air, and they learn about road safety on outings.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children are safe and secure in the childminder's care. This is because she undertakes regular risk assessments for the premises, garden area and outings. Children are effectively supervised at all times, and the childminder maintains the required adult to child ratio throughout the day. Therefore, children are protected well. The childminder demonstrates a commitment to continually improve her setting. She monitors and evaluates her setting well, and has completed all of the areas identified for improvement at the previous inspection. As a result, children's learning and well-being has been enhanced. She has good links with other early years providers and the local authority for support and professional development.
