This inspection

The young person has been at this home for over two years. This stable environment and the consistency of staffing has enabled the young person to grow, learn and mature. As a result, they are looking forward to moving into foster care. They have already started introductions and had several overnight stays. Excellent transition plans are in place, so the young person and staff know the times and dates of meetings and appointments. This means that the transition will go as smoothly as possible.

p.2

This inspection

Staff enjoy extremely good relationships with the young person and work very hard to ensure their health, educational, social and emotional needs are met. For example, staff have worked endlessly with the young person to address their fears around the dentist and they have now attended. The young person’s health has significantly improved because they are receiving the health care that they need.

p.2

This inspection

The young person has been in part-time employment at a café for a good period of time. She is doing well, learning skills and is liked by the customers. She is often called upon to cover extra shifts. She is also applying for other jobs in the retail business and has completed curriculum vitae. As a result, she is learning to budget, save and has ambitions for her future. Likewise, staff have assessed the young person’s independence skills and have given assistance and guidance when necessary. Therefore, the young person says she is confident in being able to care for herself.

p.2

This inspection

Young people are protected from harm by caring and knowledgeable staff. The manager and staff give young people’s safety the highest priority. They know exactly what they need to do to protect young people and take decisive action when they have concerns about young people’s safety. Young people’s individual care plans 3 of 5 clearly identify any risks they may face and outline effective strategies to ensure their welfare is promoted and protected. Staff ensure plans for young people’s safety are consistently put into practice and fully address their needs. They work effectively with parents, social workers and other professionals to safeguard and promote young people’s welfare.

p.2

This inspection

Young people who came to the home with a history of vulnerability to possible sexual exploitation have clear plans in place to protect them. The manager and staff work very effectively with other agencies, such as the child protection unit, local police and social workers to ensure that young people are safeguarded. Young people themselves report that they feel 'very safe' in the home.

p.3

This inspection

The manager of the home provides strong, effective leadership and has considerable experience in child care. She fully understands the needs of the young person in her care and very successfully communicates this to her staff. The manager is also well aware of the strengths of the service, areas for development and effectively secures improvements. For example, a new file structure has ensured that records are clear, organised and that young people will understand their information if they wished to access their file in the future

p.3

This inspection

Robust management monitoring arrangements ensure that there is very good oversight of the care given to young people and the progress they make. Therefore, any omissions of signatures on documents are now addressed quickly. Staff have regular supervision and report that they feel they are well supported and work well as a team. They have a very positive view about the young people they care for and feel that the home is 'very settled.' Morale in the staff team is high and this contributes to the sense of security and well-being for the young person.
