The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 Routine assessments to track children's progress in their learning and development, are not fully embedded in the childminder's practice. As a result, children's progress across the seven areas of learning, is not robustly monitored and opportunities are missed to plan well-targeted activities to meet the next steps in learning for children.  The childminder does not effectively monitor her practice, to ensure she identifies all priorities for development, in order to improve learning outcomes for children.  The television is sometimes on as background music while children play or to help them to settle when tired.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder understands how to promote the learning and development of young children. She uses satisfactory teaching strategies to engage them in their learning. As a result, children are generally working within the typical range of development expected for their age.  Partnerships with parents are positive. The childminder shares ongoing verbal and written information with parents to keep them informed and involved with their child's learning.  The childminder provides children with a welcoming, family environment where they can safely learn through play. They are happy and settled and share warm, trusting relationships.  The childminder has a sound knowledge of how to safeguard children and follows risk assessment procedures. As a result, children are safe in her care.  The childminder makes appropriate use of the local area and amenities to help children to learn about the world around them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 implement a robust system of assessment, in order to clearly identify children's achievements and the next steps in their learning; use this to plan and provide well- targeted activities that are differentiated to support all children's individual learning needs.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop methods to monitor and review practice to ensure strengths and any required improvements are clearly identified to tackle areas of weakness, in order to improve learning outcomes for children  ensure that the television is only used for specific purposes and is not left on as background noise, so children are able to listen and concentrate.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation.  The inspector observed children's play indoors.  The inspector talked to the childminder about daily practice.  The inspector viewed all areas used for childminding.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents and spoke to children.

p.2

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder understands that children learn through play and everyday routines. She utilises these opportunities to promote children's learning. Children explore mark-making with crayons and pencils, supporting their physical development and helping them to understand how their movements make marks. The childminder supports communication and language skills as she talks with children during their play and shares their experiences. However, the use of the television as a background noise sometimes means that children are distracted during activities and struggle to listen and concentrate. The childminder builds up a knowledge of individual children through observing them in their play. As a result, she is aware of their interests and has some knowledge of how they are progressing. However, she does not use information gained from observations to monitor precisely where children are in their learning. This has an impact on the childminder's

ability to identify specifically what children need to learn next, in order to plan differentiated activities to promote individual children's learning.

p.3

good

The childminder meets with parents before children attend. She collects key information, including children's interests and achievements, as well as their routine at home. This ensures that children settle well in her care and are emotionally secure. The childminder acknowledges children's achievements with praise and encouragement, which helps to build their self-esteem and confidence. The childminder promotes healthy lifestyles for children. She provides healthy snacks and meals. She helps children to develop good personal hygiene routines, such as washing their hands before meals and after toileting. Children enjoy physical play in the garden and the local park. The childminder supports children to socialise with others by attending local groups. As a result, children are gaining skills, which will support them in the move to school.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder has a suitable understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She shares information about children's progress with parents and with other settings they attend. Parents are positive in their feedback and praise the childminder for her care. The childminder is proactive in attending training to update her knowledge and skills. She has yet to implement a thorough process of self-evaluation, to identify strengths, areas for development and clear plans for improvement, to help promote the best possible practice.
