The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder offers a wide range of activities and resources, to promote all areas of children's learning and development.  The childminder uses a range of questioning techniques which help to encourage children's language and communication skills.  The childminder builds strong emotional attachments with children. Therefore, children feel safe and secure, and are ready to learn and to try new activities.  The childminder continues to promote her professional development which results in good outcomes for children.  The childminder attends safeguarding training and has a good understanding of the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child. Her knowledge helps to protect children from harm.  The childminder reflects on the quality of her provision. She makes ongoing plans to improve outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently provide opportunities for children to explore their home backgrounds and cultures, so does not fully promote their understanding of the world.  The childminder does not always give children opportunities to develop their independence and self-care skills ready for school.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve opportunities for children to learn about their home backgrounds and cultures through everyday activities  provide further opportunities for children to practise their self-care skills, to prepare them for school.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children, in the lounge, playroom and outdoor area.  The inspector sampled the childminder's policies and procedures, risk assessments and children's development records.  The inspector discussed the childminder's processes for self-evaluation and safeguarding children.  The inspector took into account the views of parents, from discussions and questionnaires.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder provides resources that are easily accessible for children to make choices and become independent learners. She talks to children all the time, for example, as she teaches them to recognise shapes and colours. The childminder introduced size and counting during an activity with dinosaurs. Her input promotes children's language development and understanding of mathematical concepts. The childminder provides space and opportunities for toddlers to build their confidence in walking. This promotes their physical development. During the inspection, the childminder encouraged children's literacy development. Children drew around stencils of dinosaurs to practise their writing skills ready for school. The childminder teaches children about festivals throughout the year. However, she provides fewer opportunities for children to learn about their own backgrounds and cultures, so they do not have a full understanding of the world.

p.3

good

Children settle well and are happy in the care of the calm and caring childminder. She gives children lots of attention and affection which promotes their personal, social and emotional development. The childminder attends music and toddler groups with children. This means they are able to play with children of different ages and become confident at building friendships ready for school. The childminder provides nutritious meals and gives children daily opportunities for physical outdoor play, so promotes their good health. She encourages children's independence and understanding of hygiene, for example, as she teaches them to use the toilet and wash their hands. However, she does not take all opportunities for children to practise their self-care skills. For instance, the childminder finds children's coats and shoes, and puts them on for them before going outside. This slightly reduces opportunities for independence.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and keeps up to date by reading guidance and networking with other childminders. She observes children and plans activities to promote their next stages of development. Consequently, children make good progress. The childminder has robust policies and procedures in place to promote children's learning, safety and well-being. The childminder's home is safe, secure and hygienic for children to use. Risk assessments are in place and regularly reviewed. Consequently children's safety is securely promoted. Parents make positive comments about the care their children receive and the good progress they make. This positive partnership working ensures children's home learning is promoted effectively.
