The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not fully understand how to complete or make effective use of the information gathered from assessments. This includes the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years.  The childminder's monitoring of the children's learning and development is not targeted enough. Therefore, planned activities are not always suitably challenging or exciting, to best support younger children's individual learning.  Younger children's interests in exploring and investigating sounds are not built on fully. The childminder does not always make the most of opportunities to enable children to make different sounds for themselves, using a variety of resources.  The childminder's evaluation of her practice is not fully effective in swiftly addressing any weaknesses, and therefore, she does not achieve consistently good-quality teaching throughout.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder ensures her home is well resourced and she offers children varied learning experiences. She makes use of child-led play interactions to support and guide children's learning. As a result, children enjoy their time at the setting and make some progress.  The childminder is welcoming, friendly and approachable. She interacts warmly with the children at their level and involves herself in their play. Consequently, children are happy, settled and confident in her home.  Partnerships with parents, professionals and other settings children attend are well established. Information about children's needs is shared. This provides continuity for children between the different settings they attend.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop a better understanding of how to gather and make effective use of information to inform assessments, including the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years  check regularly that activities provided are suitably challenging and exciting, to best support children's individual learning, particularly with regard to younger children.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of opportunities within the home for children to use resources that they can combine and use in different ways, to explore sounds and build on their interests  strengthen the evaluation of practice within the setting to swiftly address any weaknesses and achieve consistently good quality teaching throughout.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed teaching practice and evaluated an activity with the childminder.  The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding and held discussions with the childminder throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at the documents available, including risk assessments, children's records and assessment information.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and discussed her methods for self-evaluation.  The inspector sought parents' views through discussion and written comments available.

p.2

who attend. This requires improvement

The quality of teaching is variable. The childminder is well qualified but does not consistently use her knowledge and skills to help all children make excellent progress. Younger children's learning is less well promoted during planned activities. The childminder does not always challenge or enhance their current skills. Therefore, they struggle to maintain enthusiasm for some activities and sometimes their interests are not fully explored. Nevertheless, all children are able to make some progress because their learning is generally promoted by the childminder during child-led play. For example, she supports younger children to construct by balancing blocks to build towers and develops their interest in literacy by looking at books. She also encourages older children to practise the skills they will need for moving on to school. She promotes their independence and introduces them to early literacy and mathematics. The childminder is knowledgeable

about how to support children who speak English as an additional language. She continually repeats words and sentences to support them to learn. She works well with parents and professionals to access additional support as required.

p.3

good

The childminder pays considerable attention to promoting children's safety and well-being while they are in her home. She keeps her mandatory training up to date. She uses supporting documentation well, to minimise risks and puts procedures into place that protect children from harm. The childminder endeavours to get to know children well. She liaises with parents from the outset to ensure children's care needs are well met. The childminder allows children to freely explore and choose what they wish to play with. Therefore, children are motivated to learn. The childminder promotes children's physical development well. She helps them to manage their self-care as soon as they are ready. She also makes use of her outdoor equipment and the wider environment to help them become confident in moving and climbing. The childminder promotes positive behaviour within her setting and helps children learn how to negotiate with their peers.

good

Consequently, children are interested in each other's activities and play well together.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder mostly has a suitable understanding of her responsibility to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Although, she does not fully understand how to undertake the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years. The childminder routinely observes children and identifies some next steps in their learning. She discusses children's progress with parents. However, she does not make effective use of this information to routinely check that all children's learning and interests are consistently promoted and challenged. Therefore, children do not yet make the best possible progress. The childminder evaluates her provision. She seeks to make changes to improve the outcomes for children. However, the focus on the quality of teaching is not yet sharp enough to promptly raise the standards of her teaching practice.
