p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder makes accurate observations of each child. This helps her to make good assessments of their progress and identify the next steps in their learning using children's interests.  The childminder forms effective partnerships with parents so they work together to promote children's learning and development and help children to settle. She shares children's progress regularly, enabling parents to support continued learning at home.  Children learn to behave well in the childminder's home because she is a good role model and is polite and courteous. She encourages children to show respect and tolerance for each others' needs.  Children are calm and relaxed in the childminder's care and have happy relationships with her. This is due to the childminder's effective settling-in process, which helps develop children's self-confidence.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to safeguard children. She attends

training to keep her knowledge up to date.  The childminder uses effective self-evaluation to reflect on her practice and recognise priorities for improvement.

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not provide a wide range of resources and experiences to extend children's learning when outdoors.  The childminder does not always encourage children's independence during meal times.

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and interaction between the childminder and children.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation relating to children and the childminder's practice.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents and of those spoken to on the day.  The inspector and childminder took part in a joint observation.

who attend. This is good

The childminder knows the children and their interests well. This helps her to provide activities that children are enthusiastic about and help them develop. As a result, children enjoy achieving what they set out to do and are progressing well. Children play imaginatively with train sets. The childminder questions them well about what they are doing. This encourages their thinking skills and a deeper awareness and understanding, for example, when building bridges, so they learn to solve problems. For children who learn English as an additional language, the childminder gains key words they use at home from parents, so she can promote children's communication. This helps all children join in and learn from each other. The childminder provides good learning opportunities for children to explore and use resources in different ways. Children play with dry rice using spoons, ladles and containers to fill and empty, and make marks using their fingers and

toy trucks. This develops their exploration and awareness of shape, size, volume and measure.

good

The childminder helps children learn about leading a healthy lifestyle and managing their personal hygiene effectively. Children enjoy healthy snacks and home-cooked meals. The childminder does not always encourage children's independence at mealtimes, for example, by involving them in the preparation and serving themselves. The childminder helps children to prepare for changes in their lives, such as starting school, by encouraging them to put on their coats and shoes. The childminder completes daily risk assessments of her home and the outings she takes children on to minimise potential hazards. Children enjoy regular physical activities outside in the fresh air. However, the childminder does not always maximise opportunities outdoors for children to explore and learn in other areas of their development. Children learn about potential hazards because the childminder encourages them to help clear up after their play, for example, so they do

provision is good

The childminder has clear policies that reflect current legislation and guide her in her good practice. She attends training to improve her knowledge and understanding, for example, equality and diversity, which has a positive impact on children's experiences. The childminder self-evaluates the quality of her practice well and involves parents in this process. This shared approach helps to identify key areas to develop and promote children's learning well. Parents are complimentary about the childminder's care and the progress their children make. The childminder demonstrates a positive commitment to improvement and has addressed all recommendations from the last inspection to improve the observation, assessment and planning process.
