p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder engages children in lots of meaningful conversations. This helps them to learn new vocabulary and, consequently, they develop good language skills.  The childminder provides a broad range of stimulating activities which help children to make good progress in their learning and development.  Children form positive relationships with the childminder. As a result, they settle quickly into her care.  The childminder actively promotes confidence and self-esteem through praise and encouragement.  Partnerships with parents are strong. The sharing of information provides continuity in children's learning and development.  The childminder demonstrates a good capacity for continuous improvement. She evaluates her practice well, attends regular training and shares ideas with other providers.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There are fewer opportunities for children to see print and symbols in the outdoor environment, to help strengthen their understanding that print carries meaning.  The childminder does not discuss the effects of healthy eating with children to strengthen their understanding of how to maintain healthy lifestyles.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to see print and symbols in the outside environment, in order to strengthen their understanding that print carries meaning  enhance children's understanding of healthy lifestyles by, for example, talking to them about the affect that certain foods have on their bodies.

who attend. This is good

The childminder knows how children learn and develop. She uses good procedures and monitoring systems to ensure children progress well in all areas of learning. As a result, children are confident and have good self-motivation. The childminder makes regular observations of children's activities. She encourages children to follow their own interests, and interacts well with the children to support their play. For example, children played a fishing game, catching the fish in their nets from the water. The childminder extended this further by encouraging the children to count and group the different types of fish. Children enjoy looking at books independently and together with the childminder. The indoor environment is rich in print. However, this is not the same for the outdoor area where there are not so many examples of the written word to extend their literacy skills outside. The childminder offers children a variety of activities that cover all areas of learning and

prepare them well for their eventual move to pre-school, or school.

good

Children are relaxed, content and behave well. They settle quickly into the childminder's care. This is because they attend settling-in sessions when they first start, and this results in the children becoming familiar with their new surroundings. Children are learning good independence skills, for example, they put on their shoes and coats on their own, and wash their hands ready for lunch. The childminder promotes healthy eating and provides fresh home cooked meals. However, she misses opportunities to discuss the benefits of healthy eating with children when they discuss the fruit and vegetables they are eating, to extend their understanding of healthy lifestyles. The childminder puts a strong focus on children's safety. For example, she regularly practises emergency evacuation procedures with them and discusses road safety with them when out.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a very good understanding of her role and responsibilities in meeting the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She is aware of the procedures to follow should she have concerns about a child's welfare. The childminder creates a safe environment for children to play within as she regularly reviews the environment for potential risks. She implements policies and safe practices effectively to promote children's well-being, health and safety, and shares them with parents. The childminder shares children's progress with parents, who regularly share their children's achievements from home and make positive contributions to their children's assessments to promote continuity and help move them onto the next stage in their learning.
