The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder forms affectionate relationships with children and treats them with care and consideration. This supports children's emotional well-being and helps them to behave well.  The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment. Children have access to a wide range of good quality toys and equipment, which motivates them to learn.  The childminder has a good knowledge of child development and supports children's learning through play.  The childminder is reflective of her practice and takes account of the views of children and parents to improve the service she provides.  Positive partnerships with parents help the childminder to meet children's individual needs well. Parents report that their children have developed good social skills and confidence as a result of being with the childminder.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always extend children's mathematical awareness of shapes and sizes.  The childminder does not always give children time to respond to questions to further develop their thinking skills and imaginations.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 encourage children to learn mathematical language to compare size and shape during routines and as they play  give children more time to respond to questions.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's play and the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector talked with the childminder about the children and their progress.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, which included children's progress records.  The inspector spoke to parents and took account of their views.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder makes regular observations of children as they play in order to assess their needs. She welcomes parents' comments and plans effectively for the next steps in children's development. This shared approach to learning supports children's emotional development and helps them to make good progress. The childminder incorporates counting in every day routines; for example, she encourages children to count out pieces of apple and cheese at snack time. However, she does not always help them to learn about shapes, or to compare sizes of objects during routines and activities. The childminder takes children on regular outings where they access to a wider range of activities and socialise with other children. As a result, children develop key skills for their future learning and starting school.

p.3

good

The childminder gathers useful information from parents from the start, so she can follow children's familiar routines. She plans interesting and age appropriate activities. For example, she brings stories to life by encouraging children to use puppets to act them out. However, she does not always give children time to answer her questions or talk about what is happening in the stories. The childminder involves children in preparing healthy snacks, helping them to understand the importance of healthy eating, and develop their physical skills and independence. The childminder uses her garden to provide children with lots of opportunities to be physically active and enjoy learning about nature. The childminder attends training to support families and children with additional needs. This means she understands and is able to meet their health needs.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. She implements clear policies and procedures, including those for safeguarding, to promote children's welfare and safety, which she shares with parents. All recommendations from the previous inspection have been addressed. The childminder completes comprehensive risk assessments and takes sensible precautions to keep children safe. She supervises children at all times and uses stair gates to restrict their access to some parts of her home. Children tidy away toys when they have finished playing with them, and understand that this helps them to play safely. The childminder liaises with pre-schools and schools about children's progress, so they benefit from consistency of care. The childminder consults children and parents about ways she can improve her practice. Parents say they feel fully involved in their children's learning, and

value the support the childminder provides.
