Previous inspection: Satisfactory 3 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder is breaching the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage by caring for too many children in the early years age range.  The childminder does not use daily routines, such as snack time, to promote children's independence.  The childminder does not consistently support children to develop good food hygiene practices.  There is scope to improve the quality of teaching during literacy activities.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder understands how children learn and supports them well in their communication and language development.  The childminder works in close partnership with parents and seeks their views in planning next steps in children's learning. Parents express the view that the childminder keeps them well-informed about their children's time in the provision.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 ensure that the number of children cared for at any one time does not exceed that permitted.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of daily routines, such as snack time, to promote children's independence  strengthen opportunities to help children link sounds to letters of the alphabet to develop their literacy skills  promote children's awareness of food hygiene practices more fully by consistently supporting them in using the correct utensils for serving food.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children in the childminder's home.  The inspector viewed children's developmental records.  The inspector observed snack time and lunch routines.  The inspector viewed a sample of documents.

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder effectively adapts activities to suit the individual needs of children. For example, during a game younger children call out the names of household objects while older children place the objects in different parts of a house template. Children discuss and learn about where different objects belong in the house. This activity promotes older children's knowledge and understanding of the world and younger children's communication and language development. Consequently, the individual needs of children are met. However, some aspects of teaching need improvement. For example, during literacy activities, the childminder inconsistently alternates between letter names and letter sounds. As a result, children are not consistently learning to link letters with their sounds in preparation for next stages in their learning.

p.3

requires improvement

The childminder provides a warm and caring environment for the children. Children are, therefore, emotionally secure. The childminder provides interesting opportunities to extend children's imagination. For example, she plays music and leads them on an imaginary walk. Children pretend they see an apple tree and pretend to eat apples. They enjoy this activity and they learn to express their views and ideas through role play. Children make healthy choices as the childminder provides them with nutritious snacks and lunches. However, opportunities to promote children's independence are sometimes missed. For example, older children are not always encouraged to clean their faces by themselves after lunch. Children get fresh air and exercise in a secure outside area and in the local play park. They are learning some good hygiene practices as the childminder prompts them to cover their mouths when they cough. However, this is not always

consistent as children sometimes use their personal cutlery to serve themselves a second helping of food from shared bowls.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder does not have a sufficiently thorough understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements as she is caring for too many children in the early years age range. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection procedures, helping her ensure that children are protected from harm. She regularly evaluates the quality of the provision and plans for improvement. For example, she has set a target to improve links with other settings the children attend. Consequently, she shares written updates of the children's progress with the pre-school staff. This promotes continuity in children's education. The childminder undertakes training with the local authority and seeks guidance from local authority advisors to improve her performance.
