The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder offers a broad range of activities that help children make good progress in their learning. Regular communication with parents ensures children's learning is supported at home.  Children are happy and comfortable in a nurturing home environment. They form positive relationships with the childminder, which effectively supports their emotional well-being.  The childminder keeps children safe and protected. This is because she has a good understanding of the procedures to follow should she have any concerns regarding children's welfare.  The childminder manages her setting well. She maintains links with local childminding networks to keep up to date with practice issues.  The childminder provides an inviting playroom for the children. They can easily help themselves to resources which interest them and this helps to support their learning well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Occasionally, the childminder does not always make best use of a different range of teaching skills to extend children's learning further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the use of a wider range of teaching skills by making better use of skilful questioning, to help extend children's learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the lounge, conservatory and outdoor play area and conducted a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to the children and talked to the childminder about her practice.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records and sampled a range of other documents, including the childminder's self-evaluation form.  The inspector reviewed written comments from parents.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder provides a variety of activities that help children to make good progress in their learning. These include outings to various groups that offer different learning experiences for the children. This promotes children's social skills as they interact with other children. The childminder organises her home well, so that children can easily help themselves to a variety of good-quality resources. She joins in with children's play, but she does not always make the most of opportunities to use skilful questions to help further promote children's learning. The childminder works very well with parents, particularly when children first start. She involves them in assessing what their children know and can do. This means she has a good baseline from which she can help children to move on in their learning. The childminder has strengthened her links with other settings the children attend and this contributes well to supporting children's care and learning. She helps to

prepare children for nursery and school. For instance, she promotes their early literacy skills, encourages them to count and promotes their interest in books.

p.3

good

The childminder's home is clean, safe and well organised to support children's needs. Parents comment that children have 'settled very well and are very fond of the childminder'. This helps to promote children's emotional well-being because strong relationships are developed from the start. Children move confidently around the room to find resources that interest them. They enjoy active play in the garden and benefit from regular trips to the park, which promotes their physical health. Parents supply food for their children and the childminder promotes children's independence during mealtimes, for instance, by encouraging them to feed themselves. The childminder regularly updates her knowledge of child protection. Consequently, she has a secure understanding of how to recognise and respond to any concerns about children's welfare. Children are kept safe through close supervision and effective risk assessments help to minimise any hazards.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibility to meet the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. She maintains a range of policies and procedures to promote children's health, safety and well-being, which she shares with parents. Required records are well organised and well maintained. The childminder uses self-evaluation well to reflect on practice and consider areas for improvement. She has successfully addressed recommendations from the last inspection, which has improved how she promotes children's learning. The childminder monitors children's development effectively, which means she has a clear understanding of where children are in their learning. She keeps up to date with mandatory training, such as paediatric first aid and attends some additional courses to broaden her knowledge and skills.
