Young people thrive on the excellent care they are afforded. Staff support young people to engage in education and their attendance is excellent. One young person’s school attendance was 2% on admission and it is now 100%. As a result, young people are working hard to demonstrate their full potential. Young people are successful in attaining good grades in school and some are attending further education. One young person said, ‘I love college and I’m learning lots of things, you have to go to school to learn and that helps you to do things you never thought you could do’.

p.2

This inspection

Young people are flourishing and gaining confidence in their ability to achieve. Staff have recently supported a young person to compile a CV, which has enabled the young person to apply for Saturday jobs in the area. This develops young people’s social skills and assists in their journey to independence. This also means that young people develop knowledge of the community and gain experience of working with a range of people.

p.2

This inspection

All young people are making good progress in most aspects of their development. The Registered Manager and staff are very proud of the young people and how much they have achieved. Positive behaviour is rewarded and praised. This results in young people making every effort to succeed in daily activities.

p.2

This inspection

The Registered Manager is an excellent advocate for young people; and constantly strives to enhance the lives of the young people. She identifies methods of support that can be provided by staff in the home as well as engaging support from other agencies such as CAMHS. Through her persistence she has ensured that young people have the support and therapy needed. This results in young people receiving care which is tailored to their individual needs and gives them the opportunity to 3 of 6 grow and develop emotionally. One social worker said, ‘I am very impressed by the Registered Manager and staff. They provide a nurturing, homely and supportive environment. This is definitely the right placement. Complex needs are managed extremely well and helps the young people settle down significantly. I can’t thank the staff enough’. Using consistent daily routines, young people grow in all areas of their development.

p.2

This inspection

Routines focus on social, emotional and life skills development. One young person said, ‘I do my own laundry, chores after tea and tonight I will be helping to cook the tea……spaghetti bolognaise. I think it’s only fair and it’s taught me how to do things and I will be able to do them forever.’

p.3

This inspection

Staff effectively use their knowledge of young people to stimulate their interests and turn these in to learning opportunities. For example one young person likes music and has been supported to learn to play the guitar. This gives young people a sense of achievement and develops their confidence.

p.3

This inspection

The Registered Manager provides strong leadership to a stable staff team. The use of agency staff is kept to a minimum by the creative use of staff from within the Care Haven organisation. This ensures that young people are familiar with the staff and staff are attuned to the young people’s individual needs. The consistency in care affords young people security and stability.

p.3

This inspection

Care plans and placement plans are clear and easily accessible. Staff have a good knowledge of each young person in their care and contribute to care planning reviews. Staff have excellent links with key agencies which ensures that young people are heard and that their views are important to decision making processes. Young people’s individual and diverse needs are fully recorded in their care plans, which staff follow and promote.

p.3

This inspection

Young people are happy and comfortable and have positive relationships with staff. One young person said ‘staff are excellent; I like everyone and everything, its home. I feel like I am in a family and we can always say what we like and don’t like and the staff listen and sort things out’.

p.3

This inspection

Three recommendations were made at the last inspection. These have been addressed. There have been no incidents of young people going missing from the home since the last inspection. Clear procedures are in place and the Registered Manager has introduced a comprehensive reference sheet for staff. Details of any incidents are fully recorded in the incident book and in individual files. The Registered Manager now intends to review documentation with all staff to ensure they fully understand the triggers for incidents or specific behaviours which will support consistent and appropriate responses. The Registered Manager has developed a locality impact assessment which considers the environmental factors for young people in the area. This document clearly assists staff with safety issues and ensures that young people are safeguarded. Reviews for looked after children are recorded on individual files. The Registered Manager has developed robust

4 of 6 procedures for escalating concerns when documentation is not forthcoming from local authorities. This ensures that all necessary documents are received in a timely manner which assists staff in providing young people with appropriate care.

p.4

This inspection

The Registered Manager works in partnership effectively with other agencies and takes a pride in demonstrating the progress the young people are making. This gives young people a sense of achievement and they enjoy the praise and rewards this brings, which motivates them to do well. A social worker said, ‘I am very impressed with the manager and staff, who are proactive in their approach to caring for young people. I am fully updated on the progress regularly and we work together effectively in order to find the support needed for his development.’ 5 of 6
