p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder provides a stimulating and well-resourced environment, where children are happy confident learners.  Children enjoy a wealth of activities and experiences inside and outside the home.  The childminder makes accurate assessments of children's learning, ensuring children make good progress.  Children have good hygiene routines. They enjoy a wide range of healthy snacks and meals which promote their good health.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep children safe. Children learn how to assess risk for themselves and as a result they develop a good understanding of how to keep themselves safe.  The childminder has a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements and how to implement these effectively.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children are not always well supported to develop their problem-solving and critical- thinking skills.  The childminder does not gather sufficient, detailed information about what children already know and can do when they first start in order to help establish clear starting points.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 gather more detailed information from parents about what children can already do in order help establish clear starting points for future learning  develop further children's problem-solving and critical-thinking skills by, for example, giving them time to consider a variety of solutions and to talk through possibilities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home, both inside and in the garden.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from information included in the childminder's own evaluation.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation, evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder has good knowledge of the learning and development requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She understands the needs of the children well and offers a wide range of learning experiences, supporting good progress. During their play, the childminder asks children questions. However, she sometimes misses opportunities to support children in developing problem solving and critical thinking skills. This is because children are not encouraged to find solutions or discuss a variety of possibilities for themselves, particularly when the childminder asks closed questions. Nevertheless, children enjoy the educational experiences and are keen to learn. The childminder uses appropriate language, introducing new words, so children grow in confidence with their communication and language skills. This prepares children for further learning at school. Partnerships with parents are strong, with information shared daily. All about me

information regarding children's starting points in learning is gathered from home. However, the childminder does not gather sufficient information about what children already know and can do, in order to establish clear starting points for their future learning.

p.3

good

The childminder provides a safe and secure environment for children, where they are confident to explore. The children share a strong bond with the childminder. She gives cuddles, appropriate praise and encouragement, developing children's confidence and self- esteem. As a result, children are eager play and learn. The children benefit from trips out to toddler groups, play centres and parks enabling them to be physically active, promoting their good health. This also encourages social skills as children learn to take turns and share. Children are supported to assess risks for themselves. For example, when on outings children are reminded about road safety. Children behave well, as the childminder has clear boundaries and deals with situations positively, intervening appropriately.

p.3

provision is good

The chidminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities in keeping children safe. She has training in safeguarding, first aid and food safety, which has a positive impact on children's well-being. The childminder works hard to ensure parents are included in their child's learning. She attends home visits to seek further clarification of children's needs and sends out regular questionnaires to evaluate their experiences. The childminder works constructively with three pre-schools. This ensures children's learning is supported at each setting and at home. Children with additional needs are well supported as the childminder gains information and support from other professionals. The childminder evaluates her practices regularly and has a good understanding of the areas in need of development. She is part of a local network of childminders, where she seeks support and exchanges ideas to strengthen her already strong practice.
