Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the premises. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector observed activities in the lounge and dining room and evaluated an activity with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of adults in the home and she looked at evidence of the childminder's qualifications. The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's learning records, the childminder's self-evaluation, policies and procedures. The inspector took account of the views of parents, through their written responses to the childminder's questionnaires.

who attend. This is good
The childminder demonstrates a good understanding of how young children learn. She provides children with a wide range of activities that cover all areas of learning. The childminder collects detailed information about children from their parents, other settings they attend and through her observations. This means she knows the children well and plans a range of activities that excite and interest them. Children have access to a large range of resources to use in the home and they enjoy outdoor play at local parks and in the childminder's garden. Older children have good opportunities to practise their large movements through running and playing on large toys. However, there are fewer opportunities for children to use open-ended resources in different ways and to access all areas of learning during outdoor play. Good storage arrangements mean that children can independently access resources, supporting their free choice and decision making. As

children play, the childminder narrates on their activity, modelling new words and supporting their emerging language skills. As a result, children are making good progress and are well prepared for the next steps in their learning.

good
The childminder provides a warm, welcoming and child-friendly environment. Children's transition into the setting is managed well, so they become familiar with their new surroundings. The childminder knows children well and is caring and sensitive to their individual needs. She works closely with parents to ensure children's routines are followed. This provides consistency in care and develops children's sense of security, confidence and feeling of belonging. The childminder supports children well in developing a good understanding of how to manage their behaviour appropriately. She recognises children's achievements and provides plenty of praise, which develops their self-esteem. The childminder promotes children's awareness of healthy routines and encourages children to be independent. For example, young children feed themselves finger foods and independently use their own drinking cup.

provision is good
The childminder has a good understanding of the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and implements them well to ensure children's safety. She has a secure knowledge of the procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child in her care. All documentation required for the smooth running of the provision is in place. Partnerships with parents and other providers are good. The childminder regularly attends community activities with other childminders in the local area. This enables her to share and discuss best practice. The childminder uses information gained from discussions, training and the effective evaluation of her provision to identify targets for future development. Furthermore, the childminder makes good use of monitoring and tracking of children's learning, enabling her to identify any gaps in development and provide immediate support for these.
