The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 Children's communication and language skills are developing well because the childminder engages them in conversation during activities and daily routines.  The childminder provides a broad range of well-planned activities for children, which supports them to make good progress.  Children display good levels of confidence because they are settled and comfortable with childminder.  Children enjoy healthy snacks and meals which promotes their good health.  Children learn to care for their surroundings as they help the childminder keep the environment tidy and safe.  The childminder is committed to providing high-quality provision and builds good partnerships with parents and other providers.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children make good progress in their language and communication skills, however, the childminder does not make full use of all opportunities to help children link letters to their sounds to enhance their literacy skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 improve opportunities for children to learn the names and sounds of letters through play activities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed play activities in the childminder's home both inside and in the garden.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.  The inspector looked at children's records, planning documentation, and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.

who attend. This is good

The childminder provides a good range of activities to maintain children's learning and development across the seven areas of learning. Children have easy access to a varied range of low-level labelled toys and resources. This helps them develop independence in their learning. The childminder and children happily explore story sacks and use puppets to tell a story. The childminder engages in conversation with children about what they are doing and makes good use of questions to encourage children's language. As a result, children are supported effectively in their communication and language skills. The childminder introduces mathematical concepts within children's play. For example, when they sing and read '10 in the bed' she encourages children to develop their problem- solving skills by asking them to 'take one animal away'. However, the childminder does not make full use of all opportunities for children to learn the names and sounds of letters to

extend their literacy skills. The childminder shares information with parents about children's achievements through chats and daily diaries. She encourages parents' contributions to their children's assessments, and helps them support their children's learning at home.

p.3

good

The childminder provides a safe and welcoming environment. She is caring towards children, and comforts them with cuddles and reassurance when they need this. As a result, children develop positive relationships with the childminder. Children have daily opportunities to develop their physical skills through active play both in the garden and while on outings. Children learn about the importance of hygiene before they eat and after playing outside. They enhance their confidence through regular trips to toddler groups. The childminder sensitively explains positive behaviour to children as she encourages turn- taking and sharing toys. The childminder is a good role model and children are learning independent skills that help prepare them for their future learning.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good knowledge of the learning and development requirements, and how to keep children safe. She carries out daily safety checks and reviews risks in the environment regularly to keep the home safe. The childminder is dedicated to promoting good-quality provision for children and their parents. She gathers their views through questionnaires. She effectively evaluates what works well and what she needs to improve. For example, the childminder identifies she would like to undertake further training to extend her knowledge. The childminder closely checks children's progress to identify any gaps in their learning and shares this with parents. Effective partnerships with other settings help to maintain continuity for children's care and learning. Children receive good- quality care and learning opportunities through successful planning and assessment systems.
