The setting meets legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder provides a good range of resources and activities that effectively help children make good progress in their learning and development.  The indoor environment is welcoming and attractively resourced; this allows children opportunities to independently direct their own play through free choice.  The childminder takes into account the wishes of parents and children's choices to provide nutritious snacks that meet the children's dietary needs.  The childminder has good working relationships with parents and their positive feedback reflects how highly they value her service.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not consistently have opportunities to have their understanding in mathematics supported and developed.  Children's health is generally maintained well. However, the childminder does not consistently enhance children's understanding of minimising the risk of cross-infection, for example, by encouraging children to wash their hands prior to snack.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 introduce more mathematical language about the names of colours and numbers during play and planned activities  improve children's understanding of the importance of good personal hygiene by consistently encouraging them to wash their hands during daily routines.

p.2

p.2

who attend. This is good

Children's learning and development is well supported through the good quality care and learning that the childminder provides. Children show pleasure within the childminder's company, as they play and talk together consistently. This shows that relationships are well formed. Children have good opportunities to create and explore with materials that help to develop their sensory exploration. For example, as they explore with dough and shaving foam. Although the childminder includes some mathematical language as they make shapes and patterns, she misses opportunities to discuss colour and numbers. Children enjoy playing imaginatively and undertake household tasks within their play such as ironing and sweeping, which successfully supports their developing understanding of the world. These, along with other good quality activities and experiences, help children prepare for the next stages in their learning.

p.3

good

Children are happy and confident in the childminder's care. They demonstrate that they feel safe within her house as they freely choose toys and independently play in all areas of her home. Children behave well and benefit from the good amount of praise and encouragement offered by the childminder, which in turn develops their self-esteem. Children play and explore in an environment which is clean and safe as the childminder has effectively implemented risk assessments to ensure all areas of her home are secure. The childminder encourages children to develop their personal independence and self-care skills, although this is not consistently reinforced. For example, they are not always encouraged to wash their hands before snacks. The childminder takes children out daily. This helps them to build upon their physical skills, as they walk to schools, and enjoy fresh air and play in local parks.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good awareness of her responsibilities to meet the learning and development, and safeguarding and welfare requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has a strong awareness of safeguarding procedures and clearly understands how to refer a case of child protection. The childminder follows a detailed self-evaluation process, demonstrating that she is aware of her practice strengths and areas to enhance. The childminder is committed to working with the children's parents and keeps them well informed of their child's day through daily discussions and diaries. She works positively with other settings that children attend, which enables her to provide continuous care and learning for the children.
