The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not have fully effective arrangements to complete the required progress checks for two-year-old children.  The childminder does not maximise opportunities to develop children's understanding of numbers.  The childminder has not fully developed her practice for sharing information with other settings children attend to promote consistency in children's learning.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder provides children with a welcoming, family environment where they can safely learn through play. Children have access to a wide variety of toys and activities, which promote learning in all areas.  Children behave well. They have good relationships with the childminder, her assistant and each other. The childminder is kind and attentive to children and supports their well-being effectively.  Partnerships with parents are positive. The childminder shares ongoing verbal and written information with parents to keep them informed and involved with their child's development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide parents with a short written summary of their child's progress in the prime areas of learning when their child is aged between two and three years.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase children's opportunities to develop confidence with counting and to recognise written numbers  strengthen further partnerships with other settings children attend to establish a regular two-way flow of detailed information that promotes a fully joined-up approach to meeting children's learning needs.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation.  The inspector observed children's play indoors.  The inspector talked to both the childminder and her assistant about daily practice.  The inspector viewed all areas used for childminding.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents.

p.2

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder understands how to support children to develop their skills in readiness for the next stages in their education. Children are active learners and the childminder sensitively interacts with play. She asks children questions to make them think and answers questions children pose, as they take ownership of their own learning. The childminder fosters children's interest in literature, and their understanding of words having meaning, as she shares books with them. Children develop their communication skills as they talk to the childminder about the pictures. The childminder, however, does not take all opportunities to promote mathematics. For example, she does not provide written numbers in the play environment and does not encourage children to count the pirates in the storybook.

p.3

good

The childminder has completed safeguarding training and is confident with the procedures to follow should she have any concerns. She shares this information with her assistant. Practices and procedures are effective in developing children's understanding of health and safety. They learn about road safety on outings with the childminder. The childminder risk assesses her home and supervises children well so they keep safe as they play. Children are happy and develop into independent learners as they freely choose what they play with. They have good self-esteem as a result of the praise and encouragement they receive. Children play cooperatively together and amicably share toys. The childminder values and displays children's artwork and this promotes their sense of belonging in her home.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder has a suitable understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She tracks children's learning to identify any gaps in achievement, which she then plans to address. As a result of this all children make steady progress. The childminder understands the assessment requirements relating to the completion of written progress checks for two-year-old children. However, she has failed to complete this check for all children. The childminder has established links with other settings children attend. However, there is no detailed sharing of information to ensure a high level of consistency in meeting children's learning needs. The childminder evaluates her practice to identify areas for improvement. Questionnaires and testimonials from parents are positive in their praise of the childminder and her assistant. The childminder is proactive in attending training to update her knowledge and skills and supervises her assistant

effectively. She has completed a level 3 childcare qualification and this improved knowledge has a positive impact on how she organises her provision for children.
