p.1

This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is good as the childminder is skilful in her interactions with children. She effectively uses questions to support, extend and encourage children's learning.  The childminder knows children well. This helps her plan experiences and activities for children based on their needs and interest. As a result, children make good progress in their development.  Children are confident and happy in the childminder's care as she capably promotes their emotional wellbeing. Children form secure emotional attachments with her.  The childminder keeps clear policies, procedures and children's records, which she regularly updates, shares with parents and makes available for inspection. This promotes children's learning and welfare effectively.  The childminder demonstrates a commitment to making improvements which benefit children. She is studying for a formal childcare qualification, which has had a good

impact on the learning experiences she offers children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not maximise opportunities in children's routines to encourage children to play outside during the winter months.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase opportunities for children to play outdoors, to further develop a positive attitude to healthy lifestyles and to fully support those children who prefer to learn outdoors.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and her interactions with children as they played inside.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation. This included Disclosure and Barring Service checks, qualifications, safeguarding policies and procedures, risk assessments and children's learning records.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to during the inspection.

p.2

who attend. This is good

The childminder is training for a Level 3 childcare qualification. This has enhanced her understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how children learn. As a result, she provides a good range of activities indoors which interest and challenge children. These prepare children well for their future move to school. Children's communication and thinking skills develop well because the childminder uses open questioning techniques successfully. These encourage children to organise their thoughts and develop good relationships as they consider others' ideas. Older children receive good support to develop early reading and writing skills. The childminder helps them to write numbers and encourages them to read their names. Children learn about the natural world as they share non-fiction books and take part in activities such as collecting leaves. The children take daily walks in the locality and they often play in the local park. The children have

some limited access to the shared outdoor area. However, the childminder does not always consider how to promote outdoor play for children who attend after school during the winter months. This does not fully support their understanding of healthy lifestyles or wholly consider those children who prefer to play and learn outside.

p.3

good

The childminder has a sensitive understanding of children's care routines and home experiences from her ongoing discussions with parents. The childminder instils good manners and appropriate boundaries. The environment is clean and well organised. As a result, children behave well, and they show initiative in their play as they plan their actions and self-select materials. The childminder encourages children to take responsibility for managing their personal hygiene as appropriate for their age. This means children become confident to use the toilet and wash their hands using soap before they eat. The childminder teaches children how to manage some risks safely. For example, they tidy away toys so they are not tripping hazards and they learn how to cross roads safely.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a secure understanding of her responsibilities to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Training she has undertaken means she is exceptionally aware of procedures to safeguard children. Well-organised documentation helps her keep children safe. The childminder works with her local authority adviser as she continually reviews and develops her practice, and is aware of her strengths and areas for development. She involves parents as she assesses and monitors children's progress from their starting points, and plans their next steps. This promotes good continuity in children's learning and ensures that any gaps in children's learning close quickly. Parents contribute to her self-evaluation. Parent questionnaire responses are overwhelmingly positive.
