p.1

This provision is good

 Children are motivated to learn because the childminder successfully guides their interests and stimulates learning through play.  Children's language and communication skills are promoted well. The childminder engages in discussion with them at all times and encourages them to talk about the activities they have enjoyed.  Good relationships formed with parents enable important information to be shared about children's welfare and learning needs. The childminder seeks the views of parents about the care provided. This enables her to take effective steps to enhance the care she provides.  The childminder prioritises safeguarding to ensure children's welfare is effectively supported and good measures are taken to ensure the premises are safe. Children enjoy a range of healthy snacks and drinks which promote their health and well-being.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently encourage the children to be involved in setting up and preparing the activities. Therefore, on occasions their learning is not fully maximised.  The childminder does not consistently maximise opportunities for children to extend their understanding of mathematics.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 encourage children's understanding of mathematics further, for example, by weighing and measuring ingredients during cooking activities.  extend and enhance children's learning further by involving them in setting up and preparing the activities.

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas of the premises used for childminding.  The inspector took account of parents' views through written feedback.  The inspector reviewed the children's observation and assessment records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability, her qualifications and her self-evaluation.

who attend. This is good

Children are busy, active learners who are keen to take part in the activities provided for them. The childminder successfully supports children in extending their independence skills in everyday routines. Children compound their understanding of shapes and colours through planned activities, such as painting. However, the childminder does not always fully extend the children's learning as the activities are fully prepared for them. For example, the childminder chooses the paints and various sponge shapes in readiness for the activity rather than encouraging the children to do this. Children enjoy re-enacting familiar events. They take the dolls shopping on the bus, caring for their needs. Children enjoy simple cooking activities, such as baking cakes and biscuits. However, the childminder does not fully extend their understanding of mathematics by teaching them to weigh and measure the ingredients, as these are prepared for them. Partnerships with

parents are good as the childminder encourages a two-way sharing of information each day. The childminder observes and assesses children as they play and is able to plan effectively for their individual next steps in learning.

p.3

good

The childminder provides a welcoming, homely environment. Children form good bonds of attachment through the time spent getting to know each other at the start of their placement. Children's safety is given high importance and they learn how to use the stairs safely when going downstairs for outdoor play. They follow good safety routines when crossing the road. Children's confidence and self-esteem continually blossom through the positive strategies in place for behaviour and the praise and encouragement they receive. Children are reminded to share toys and they are encouraged to take turns as they learn to negotiate for favourite toys. The childminder provides opportunities for children to meet and make friends with other children at various groups they attend. This supports the development of their social skills well in readiness for school.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the learning and development requirements and provides activities that support children's learning and prepare them well for school. Children remain safe through the childminder's vigilance and detailed risk assessments are in place. The childminder keeps her knowledge of good childcare practice up to date through training courses and talking to other providers of childcare. The childminder actively seeks the views of parents using the service to continually reflect on her own practice and take steps to enhance the service further. Parents speak positively of the service they and their children receive. Daily discussion and the use of communication books ensure they remain fully informed of their child's progress and learning. Good communication takes place with local pre-schools who share the care of children. This ensures continuity of care and extends children's learning, especially in preparation for
