p.1

This provision is good

 Assessment systems provide the childminder with information about what children are able to do. She uses these effectively to plan how to move children on in their learning and as a result, children make good progress.  Children are settled and display a strong sense of belonging. They have formed close attachments with the childminder.  Effective systems help the childminder to evaluate her practice. Continual reflective practice and ongoing training helps identify improvements that enhance the quality of the setting and support children's individual needs.  The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of child protection, including the procedures to follow in the event of a concern.  A wide range of resources and activities are available for children to enjoy and the childminder enhances children's play by supporting them to explore and enjoy these.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has established good partnerships with parents. However, there is scope to involve parents further in their children's learning at home.  The background noise of the television is a distraction to children on occasions during play activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance opportunities for parents to help continue their children's learning at home  promote children's listening and speaking skills by limiting background noises such as the television so that it does not distract children's learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector discussed with the childminder how she is using her observations to support children's individual learning and development.  The inspector took into account the views of parents.  The inspector checked evidence of suitability and qualifications of the childminder and the suitability of other adults living in or working in the home.  The inspector discussed the self-evaluation systems.  The inspector observed activities in the home setting and spoke to the childminder and to children at appropriate times during the inspection.

who attend. This is good

The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of how children learn and develop. She provides a broad range of toys and activities. These are stored at low-level enabling children to access independently what they chose to play with. This promotes children's decision-making skills and independence as they initiate their own play. Resources, such as play food, cooking utensils and a telephone reflect items they see in everyday life. This encourages younger children to develop an interest in role play. The childminder supports and engages children effectively in play, introducing new vocabulary at a level appropriate to their stage of development. She joins in with children's play, role modelling how different toys work and encouraging children to share and take turns during activities. The childminder uses her initial discussion with parents and ongoing observations of children as they play to plan activities. This supports their ongoing progress and helps prepare

them for school. The childminder generally supports children's communication development effectively. She introduces colours, numbers and shapes, and repeats simple phrases. However, the television was on throughout the inspection and on occasions, this was a distraction to children. For example, they lose focus when asked a question or when concentrating on an activity.

p.3

good

Comprehensive risk assessments help the childminder to identify and minimise risks immediately. Children enjoy a wide range of healthy, nutritious snacks and meals. These include a selection from all around the world. The childminder ensures that she has information on individual dietary requirements and menus are reflective of any cultural or religious needs. Children have daily opportunities for fresh air and exercise. The childminder promotes physical skills effectively through play apparatus in her garden and at parks and through musical activities.

p.3

provision is good

The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of her responsibilities as a childminder. The childminder has effective planning and assessment systems in place to help identify and promote children's individual care and learning needs. The childminder has established close partnerships with parents. She regularly exchanges information regarding care needs and activities that children enjoy. However, she is not routinely exchanging information on how parents can support their child's learning needs at home. The childminder reflects well on her practice and completes training courses that will enhance her knowledge and understanding. She liaises regularly with her co-childminder to ensure that they monitor the effectiveness of their setting. This effectively helps improve the quality of care and learning they provide.
