Previous inspection: Satisfactory 3 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings
p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The quality of monitoring is variable. The childminder does not assess children's progress frequently or accurately enough. This does not enable her to quickly identify any potential gaps in children's learning. The childminder does not always provide children with a selection of healthy foods to choose from during snack time. This does not fully promote their understanding of healthy eating. The childminder does not match some activities well enough to older children's needs. Therefore, older children do not always make the best possible progress.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder has warm and caring relationships with children and they are happy and settled in her care. Resources are well organised to promote children's independence and choice. The childminder demonstrates a secure understanding of child protection procedures, which safeguards children's well-being.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

who attend. This requires improvement
The childminder arranges her home well to promote children's learning and development. There is a range of age-appropriate toys and resources that are easily accessible to children to promote their independence. The childminder plans activities that she bases upon children's next steps in learning. However, practice is less effective for the older children as the childminder does not always ensure that activities have a good level of challenge. For example, she does not use effective questioning techniques to enhance children's thinking skills. Although routine observations identify next steps, the childminder does not use these to monitor children's progress. As a result, she does not identify areas where children need extra support at an early stage.
p.3
requires improvement
Children are comfortable and settled in the childminder's home. They develop positive bonds with the childminder and approach her readily for comfort or attention. The childminder has a warm and caring approach. The childminder carefully stores and prepares the food that parents provide in order to protect children's health. However, the childminder does not always give older children healthy snacks throughout the day. This does not enhance their understanding of healthy lifestyles. Children are developing skills to manage their own personal needs, which supports children as they move onto the next stage in their learning, such as school. The childminder supervises children carefully and makes sure safety precautions such as safety gates and door locks are in place. She practises fire drills with the children regularly. This helps them develop an awareness of how to keep themselves safe in an emergency.
p.3
provision requires improvement
The childminder demonstrates a sufficient understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. She has a paediatric first-aid certificate and therefore she is able to respond appropriately if children have an accident or become unwell. The childminder expresses a willingness to improve her setting and has made use of local courses. However, she has not appropriately developed her knowledge of monitoring her practice to ensure that she monitors children's learning and development effectively. Consequently, monitoring of assessments is not consistent to identify gaps in children's learning. The childminder keeps parents suitably informed on a day-to-day basis, which supports consistency for children's well-being and learning.
