Previous inspection: Inadequate 4 How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Requires improvement The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Requires improvement The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Requires improvement The setting does not meet legal requirements for early years settings

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not consistently match older children's learning needs with appropriately challenging activities to help them make further progress in their learning. Consequently, not all children make good progress.  The childminder does not include the views and suggestions of parents when evaluating her practice to help her improve outcomes for children.  The childminder does not gain information from parents about children's development when they first attend. Therefore, she does not have details of their abilities to help her plan their learning effectively from the start.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The children are happy and secure in the childminder's home. They develop confidence and independence because resources are accessible and they can select them for themselves.  The childminder provides activities that she knows will interest the children.  The childminder works closely with other early years settings that children attend to promote continuity in children's care and development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve the quality of teaching to provide older children with challenging experiences and activities that enable them to make good progress in all areas of development.

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop self-evaluation processes to include the views of parents and use them to improve practice and outcomes for children  extend the information gathered from parents regarding children's development to help plan their progression as soon as they attend.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and the children indoors.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's records and learning journals, policies and procedures, accident and attendance records.  The inspector viewed the childminder's self-evaluation document.  The inspector took account of parents' views provided for the inspection.

p.2

who attend. This requires improvement

The childminder provides a suitable range of experiences and activities which support children to make adequate progress in their learning. The children enjoyed completing puzzles and proudly said, 'I have done it', as they completed the puzzle. However, the puzzles provided were too easy for the older children and did not extend them. Nevertheless, the childminder engaged children in conversation as they talked together about the pictures on the various puzzles. They made comparisons with the weather outside and the childminder introduced mathematical language, such as 'on the top' and 'underneath'. The childminder completes written observations and assessments to track children's learning and development. Although she uses this information to plan children's progress, she does not ensure that she provides all children with sufficient challenge. Consequently, this hinders their progression. The childminder recognises that some

children need extra support and so uses sign language to encourage their communication.

p.3

requires improvement

The childminder promotes children's health and well-being appropriately. For example, she teaches them suitable personal hygiene procedures and ensures they have easy access to drinks. Children enjoy regular outings around the local area. This helps to promote their understanding of the world around them and the importance of fresh air and exercise. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder supports children to share and take turns. She encourages the older children to help with the younger children, for example, by finding the items needed to change their nappies. Children develop their physical skills appropriately, as they manage tasks for themselves and move around safely. These activities help children to develop the basic skills they need for the move on to school.

p.3

provision requires improvement

The childminder has completed an evaluation of her practice and has made improvements since the last inspection. She has a suitable understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures. She has attended training and this has enabled her to improve her knowledge and understanding of what to do. The childminder implements appropriate safety measures to keep children safe. She has a suitable understanding of the learning and development requirements. She has made some positive changes to help children progress. She shares her ongoing planning and assessments with parents but does not involve them fully when children first attend. Likewise, she does not seek their views to help her evaluate and improve her practice further. Nevertheless, the childminder has attended some training courses and has identified more to support her professional development and sustain improvement.
