This inspection
This home was judged good at the last full inspection. At this interim inspection Ofsted judge that it has sustained effectiveness .
p.2
This inspection
At the full inspection in July 2014, the overall rating was judged to be good. One recommendation was made to further improve the quality and standard of care provided. The home has made some attempts to address issues relating to providing alternatives to formal education provision. Much of this work was unsuccessful in engaging the young person and preventing them getting further behind peers in education attainment. As such this recommendation is repeated. Further recommendations have been made as a result of this inspection.
p.2
This inspection
Staff attempts to engage young people in meaningful educational activities are not well organised, and although some success has been achieved, progress in this area is limited. This situation is further compromised by a series of unofficial exclusions from the organisation’s school. This practice limits options for appeals by parents or carers and delays young people accessing their entitlement to full time education. Arrangements to provide a home tutor from the school don’t compensate for these exclusions. The manager makes representation to the school on behalf of young person in trying to deal with these issues.
p.2
This inspection
Young people continue to progress in other areas of their lives. There are notable and significant improvements in self-awareness which has impacted on and reduced negative behaviour and helped young people consider health issues. They have also become more aware of surroundings and began to take responsibility for keeping their things and bedrooms in better order.
p.2
This inspection
The home continues to provide a service which avoids the use of physical restraint and uses rewards, discussion and praise to manage difficult behaviour. Young people quickly develop a trust in staff and confidence that staff will act in their best interests. Incidents of young people going missing from this home remain few and far between: no incidents have been reported since before the last inspection. 3 of 5 Improvements have been made to the environment and it remains clean, well decorated and homely. When young people move on, the bedroom is redecorated and refurbished to provide for a new resident. This contributes to them feeling valued and welcome in the home.
p.2
This inspection
The monthly monitoring visits to the home on behalf of the responsible individual have continued to identify any shortfalls and provided additional safeguards for young people. The manager has not acted on a finding from these reports and as a result staff appraisals remain out of date. This has potential to limit staff development and opportunities to improve their practice.
p.3
This inspection
Staff rotas do not clearly identify the full names of staff on duty to demonstrate staffing levels and providing a permanent record of those caring for the young people.
p.3
This inspection
Lone working risk assessments do not identify particular risks and actions for staff to take where they have physical disabilities which may impact on their responses to deal with incidents. 4 of 5
