Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate
An Ofsted inspector, Julie Morrison, monitored your provision on 17/06/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
As a result of our inspection on 23/01/2014, we sent you a notice to improve. If you were set actions at the inspection, or as a result of our subsequent monitoring or investigations, these are included at the end of this letter unless we have already verified that they have been completed.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
During the monitoring visit the inspector discussed with you the steps you have taken to address the actions raised in the notice to improve. She held discussions with you and representatives from the local authority and observed your interaction with children during play. The inspector had a tour of the premises and looked at your action plan, children's records, risk assessments and children's learning journals.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have worked closely with the local authority early years representatives to create a clear and concise action plan of the areas to improve. This has helped to drive and sustain improvement. For example, you have reorganised your documentation so that all children's records are in place, up-to-date and easily available for inspection. You have also changed how you record children's attendance to ensure that an up-to-date record of children's hours of attendance is maintained.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have updated your fire evacuation policy and your risk assessments to clearly identify any potential hazards to children. You have also labelled the emergency exit points within your home so that all family members are aware to keep these areas free from obstruction. In addition, you complete daily checks prior to children arriving to ensure that the space remains safe for children to play. This helps to safeguard children.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have updated your knowledge and understanding of the learning and development requirements through relevant reading, working with the local authority and attending very recent training. This has enabled you to be more confident in supporting children's learning and development. The inspector observed that you engaged well with the children to extend their learning through play and that you provided children with enjoyable activities across all areas of learning. It is evident that you have reviewed how you observe and assess children's progress and each child has an up-to-date learning journal in place. Although, some of your systems are in their infancy, you explained how you carry out regular observations of children, which you link to the areas of learning and the development bands. This is helping you to identify the progress that children are making and identify any gaps in their learning. Through discussion it is clear that you have a

suitable understanding of children's next steps in learning, however, you recognise that there is still scope to improve how you use this information more effectively to inform your planning. You explained that you intend to continue working with the local authority to develop this.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
