Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate
An Ofsted inspector, Janet Singleton, monitored your provision on 23/06/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
As a result of our inspection on 27/03/2014, we sent you a notice to improve. If you were set actions at the inspection, or as a result of our subsequent monitoring or investigations, these are included at the end of this letter unless we have already verified that they have been completed.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
During the monitoring visit the inspector discussed with you the steps you have taken to address the actions raised in the notice to improve. She looked at your documentation regarding the planning of the activities provided for children. She discussed with you your understanding of ensuring that appropriate checks are carried out on any assistants employed by yourself, to ascertain their suitability. The inspector also talked to you about the supervision of children relating to them being in sight or hearing of yourself, at all times. The inspector discussed with you how you are improving your teaching practice to promote children's learning and development. You explained to the inspector that you have welcomed support from the local authority.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have implemented an action plan to address the issues raised. This has allowed you to identify and plan for the issues raised and to plan for ongoing improvement.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you now have a much clearer understanding of the need to ensure that children are supervised by yourself at all times, in order that they are kept safe and secure in your care. You discussed your understanding that all clearances and suitability checks undertaken for assistants must be fully completed before they can be left with children. Additionally, you explained you have a much better knowledge of the need to complete these checks, to determine the assistant's suitability, before they can be left unsupervised in their work. Therefore, this means, children are much better protected and safeguarded while in your care. However, you explained you are no longer employing any assistants or persons to help you with your childminding practice.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have reviewed your planning to ensure children are provided with a range of good quality activities matched to their identified needs. This means you are planning to improve children's learning and development through purposeful play. You discussed how you have improved the resources available and particularly, for younger children, for you to enhance their learning and development.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You explained how you have been working with the early years adviser to improve your teaching practice. You have planned to observe good practice in another setting so you can see how open questioning can be used to support children's learning. Additionally, you explained you have been working closely with the local authority adviser on how your interactions are important in developing children thinking skills and problem solving skills, additionally, you explained you now understand how this can be done through everyday activities, for example, by counting at snack time, to extend their learning. However, you recognised this is an area that is still developing and not yet fully embedded.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
