Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate
An Ofsted inspector, Lucy Showell, monitored your provision on 12/06/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
As a result of our inspection on 26/03/2014, we sent you a notice to improve. If you were set actions at the inspection, or as a result of our subsequent monitoring or investigations, these are included at the end of this letter unless we have already verified that they have been completed.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
During the monitoring visit the inspector discussed with you the steps you have taken to address the actions raised in the notice to improve. She looked at your records of the visits from your local authority support worker and completed self- evaluation forms. The inspector observed activities and reviewed the spaces, resources and toys available for the children. She also looked at documentation including your first aid certificate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have developed a clear plan to address the actions raised at your inspection and any actions that you could address immediately after the last inspection, were completed straight away. You identified that you are responsible for ensuring that appropriate action is taken in a timely manner. The self-evaluation of your provision has been re-visited and updated. This assessment of practice has taken into account the views of parents and other childcare professionals and recognises the progress made to date. This also demonstrates your commitment to ongoing improvement.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
You have taken appropriate steps to fully ensure children's safety while on outings. For example, you explained that while travelling in the car each child sits on an individual seat and is fastened in by a seat belt. Furthermore, you confirmed that you do not allow older children to walk a younger child into school while you remain in the car. Evidence showed that you have completed a local authority approved training course, which is relevant for workers caring for young children and you now hold a current paediatric first aid certificate. This is valid for three years and means that you now have up-to-date knowledge and skills to meet children's needs in the event of an accident or emergency situation. As a result, children's safety and well- being are no longer compromised.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
You have reorganised the furniture in the conservatory and removed the large table, which restricted the space available. Younger children are observed sitting comfortably around a small table to eat and you explained that older children sit together at the breakfast bar in the kitchen. You explained that you have also reviewed and rearranged the toys and resources. During the monitoring visit the inspector observed children freely accessing a good variety of resources and toys in the conservatory, which are age appropriate and support their learning and development well. This enhances children's decision-making skills because they are now able to explore the wide range of resources and play at their own pace.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You detailed how you now ensure appropriate hygiene routines are followed consistently, in order to promote children's good health and well-being. For example, you explained that older children manage their own hygiene as they wash their hands at the sink before eating. You also explained that you have risk assessed this practice in relation to younger children and feel it becomes too challenging to manage when more than one child is present. Therefore, as an alternative, you now ensure that anti-bacterial wipes are readily available. The inspector observed you supporting children by wiping their hands and then giving them the opportunity to have a go themselves. This shows that children foster their own personal development and independence and their good health is no longer compromised.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You explained that you are working closely with the local authority advisers, continually reviewing what you do and seeking to improve the service you provide. During the monitoring visit you shared records of their visits with the inspector. This documentation confirmed that clear plans are in place and that open dialogue continues to identify and action the ongoing improvements being made.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
