p.1
Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate
An Ofsted inspector, Diane Burt, monitored your provision on 23/05/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
As a result of our inspection on 07/04/2014, we sent you a welfare requirements notice. If you were set actions at the inspection, or as a result of our subsequent monitoring or investigations, these are included at the end of this letter unless we have already verified that they have been completed.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The welfare requirements notice required you to: ensure the requirement relating to childminders caring for a maximum of six children under 8 years of age, of whom three may be young children, and there should be only be one child under the age of one, is met at all times; ensure Ofsted are informed about any changes in persons working on the premises; keep an accurate and up-to-date daily record of the children's hours of attendance. It is an offence to fail to meet a welfare requirements notice without reasonable excuse.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
We also issued you with a notice to improve that asked you to take the following actions: improve interaction with children during their activities to provide opportunities for them to think, solve problems and to develop vocabulary;
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
develop a clear understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements and use this understanding to foster a culture of continuous improvement to identify, and address, areas of weakness to improve outcomes for children.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
At the monitoring visit completed on 23 May 2014 you had taken prompt and effective action regarding the Safeguarding and welfare requirements.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
You were asked to ensure that you are meeting staff: child ratios at all times and that your register is up to date. This you have now done and you are meeting the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements by caring for the correct number of children in the early years age range. Any exception to this is because siblings are already attending. Your register is completed as children arrive and leave your care. You state that you have not made any changes to persons working on the premises so no action has to be taken regarding this. However you have shown that you are aware of the process to follow should you wish to do so. These procedures all ensure children are kept safe from harm.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
You have made some progress regarding the learning and development requirements, although the inspector acknowledged that the due dates for some of the actions raised have not yet been reached. You state you are playing more board games with children, completing jigsaws and talking about the picture as it develops, making sure it is not all adult-led. This now needs extending to ensure that each child is considered individually and play is purposefully planned. This will ensure that each activity gives sufficient challenge and reflects the needs and interests of all children attending – extending all children’s language.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Regarding your self-evaluation, you have identified tracking sheets to help you to monitor children's overall progress and help identify any gaps in their learning. This will help you to narrow any gaps for groups of children and also identify children who may need support. You are also now more aware of the requirements which you must adhere to.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You have accepted and received support from the local authority and have also identified online training for your own professional development. This support and development on improving learning and development requirements will help you ensure that all children's interests, abilities and learning styles are taken into account when planning experiences.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence at the monitoring visit the inspector is of the opinion that you have taken prompt and effective action in relation to meeting all of the actions raised in the welfare requirement notice and some in the notice of action to improve. However you are still working towards meeting the learning and development actions and therefore the next visit will be a further monitoring visit.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
p.2
Next steps
The next step will be further monitoring. I hope that you have found the visit helpful in promoting improvement in your childminding service. If you have any further queries please contact us on the number at the top of this letter.
