Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate

An Ofsted inspector, Sheena Bankier, monitored your provision on 06/05/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

As a result of our inspection on 06/02/2014, we sent you a notice to improve. The actions you were set are included at the end of this letter.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

During the monitoring visit the inspector discussed with you how you have addressed the actions raised in the notice to improve and your action plan. She observed your practice and viewed documentation, including a sample of updated policies and children's progress records.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

The inspector found you have addressed the actions promptly and sought by gaining advice and support from your local authority early years development teamworker. They have visited you and provided further support by telephone. Your early years development worker has supported you in developing your paperwork, which you have reviewed and updated since your inspection. They provided examples of formats for making observations of children's learning and development. You have taken their advice and implemented new formats for recording observations and assessing children's achievements. As a result, you have improved your knowledge and understanding of children's individual level of development and are using observations and a tracking system to identify children's next steps in learning and any gaps in their achievements. This enables you to tailor your learning experiences and activities to children's individual needs. You have considered how you will

establish new children's starting points in the future so you can accurately measure children's progress from their time of entry.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

You have improved your knowledge and understanding of the learning and development requirements including the seven areas of learning. You have re-read the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. In addition, you are using relevant child development guidance as you work to ensure you provide for the seven areas of learning in your activities, outings and play experiences. You are maintaining accurate records of children's daily attendance and you are aware of timescales for keeping regulatory Our Reference EY464464

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

You have improved your partnerships with parents and other settings that children attend. Through this you are gaining information about topics and themes children are covering at school and are complementing these with activities and resources at your setting. This means you are supporting children in continuing their learning in your care. You exchange information with parents on a daily basis about their children's learning and development needs in person and provide daily written diaries. This enables you and the parents to work together to support children's learning and care needs consistently. Since your inspection, you have reviewed and updated your policies and procedures so that they reflect your service. Within these, you have included information about how you implement the learning and development requirements and support children's play and learning. Parents have received an updated copy of your policies and procedures to keep them informed

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

At the monitoring visit your practice was observed with the minded children. The inspector observed your interaction and support for children's learning, such as encouraging counting, asking questions to promote children's thinking skills and talking to children about good hygiene practice. You discussed using everyday activities and routines to support and promote children's learning and development, such as outdoor activities. You discussed that children enjoy regular outdoor activities both in the garden and through visits to the park. These activities include growing seeds, observing and feeding garden birds, using physical play equipment, mark making using chalks and using different materials, such as sand and water. You provide activities linked to children's level and stage of development. For example, to encourage a baby to move you put toys just out of reach to support their crawling skills. You are now encouraging walking and standing skills to enable them to

progress further by holding their hands and putting toys on low level units. Through discussion you are supporting children in developing their independent self-care skills. For instance, in preparation for starting nursery you are working with parents to support children in being able to manage their own clothing and to visit the toilet and wash their hands unaided.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
