Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate
An Ofsted inspector, Diane Turner, monitored your provision on 12/05/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
As a result of our inspection on 02/12/2013, we sent you a notice to improve. The actions you were set are included at the end of this letter.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
During the monitoring visit the inspector discussed with you the steps you have taken to improve. She reviewed how you have ensured that any assistant who may be in sole charge of children holds a current paediatric first-aid qualification. She also discussed how you have increased your understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage, to ensure children learn, develop and are kept healthy and safe and that you meet the adult to child ratio requirements. The inspector discussed with you how you have improved the planning of learning experiences, with particular regard to supporting children to develop their self-care and mathematics skills. The inspector also spoke to a representative from the local authority and observed your engagement with children and that of your assistant.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have devised a comprehensive action plan detailing the steps you have taken to address the issues raised at your last inspection. You have also reviewed and updated your self-evaluation document and assessed the impact the improvements have made on improving the outcomes for children's care and learning. This has enabled you to accurately prioritise the areas for improvement identified at your last inspection and to plan for ongoing improvement.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
A paediatric first-aid training course has been attended by two of your assistants so they both now hold a current first-aid qualification. This means they meet the qualification requirements when they have sole charge of children for short periods of time.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
You have revisited the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and are confident in your understanding of the required adult to child ratios. You have also employed another assistant who is present if you care for more than three children in the early years age group, to ensure the required ratios are met at such times. have improved the ways in which you keep children safe and healthy by reinforcing safe practices, such as road safety with them on a daily basis. You have also purchased high visibility tabards for children to wear when out in the community so they can be seen easily by you. You consistently implement behaviour management strategies, to reinforce what is expected of children. Consequently, they are starting to develop a responsible attitude to their personal safety. You have purchased individual hand towels for children to use after hand washing, to prevent the risk of cross infection and to further promote children's good health.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You have introduced an electronic system for recording children's starting points and your ongoing observations of their learning. This enables you to effectively track where each child is in their development, identify where their progress is below the expected levels for their age and to plan for the next steps in their learning. You use this information to inform your future planning of activities, to support each child to reach their full potential. The arrangements also mean that parents can have instant access to their child's developmental record. As a result, they have a clear picture of their child's development when they are in your care. They can also add their observations of their children's learning at home to the record, to further assist you in planning for children's future learning.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You have taken action to provide ongoing opportunities for children to develop and extend their understanding of mathematical concepts by purchasing large board games that encourage counting and number recognition. You encourage children to recognise numerals in context in their environment, such as those displayed on refuse bins, gates and house doors. You have also provided small numbered stones which children can move easily, to support their understanding of how to put numbers in order.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Older children are now discouraged from using the potty for their toileting needs and are being supported to use the bathroom upstairs independently. You have also provided children with a comb and toothbrush, which are used to further encourage their independence in self-care skills.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
