p.1

Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate

An Ofsted inspector, Julie Whitelaw, monitored your provision on 18/02/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

As a result of our inspection on 18/10/2013, we sent you a welfare requirements notice. The actions you were set are included at the end of this letter.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

The welfare requirement notice asked you to: devise a clear and well-understood policy, and procedures, for assessing and minimising or removing any risks to children's safety, and review risk assessments regularly (Risk assessment); ensure that children are supervised at all times and not left alone with any individual whose suitability has not been checked (Staff: child ratios); ensure that an accurate daily record of the children's hours of attendance is maintained in order to safeguard children's welfare and well-being (Information about the provider).

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

We also issued a notice of actions to improve that asked you to: ensure that any assistants who might be in sole charge of children hold a current first aid certificate and are competent in the areas of work they undertake (Staff qualifications, training support and skills); ensure that vehicles in which children are being transported and the driver of those vehicles are adequately insured (Outings); ensure that where children are provided with meals, snacks and drinks, they must be healthy, balanced and nutritious and meets the needs of the child (Food and drink). These actions were due to be met by 6 December 2013.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

Further actions were issued in relation to learning and development that asked you to: develop a secure understanding of the learning and development requirements of the Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage, to promote the learning and development of all children; use observation and assessment of children in order to effectively plan and shape their learning experiences, and to ensure that children are provided with sufficient accessible resources to promote future learning and development; ensure that parents are provided with a short written summary of their child's development in the prime areas between the age of two and three years; improve knowledge of how to help children increase their communication and language skills as well as possible by talking aloud, describing what children are Our Reference EY296011

doing and encouraging them to comment on their play activities. These actions were due to be met by 6 January 2014.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

On 11 December 2013, we carried out an unannounced monitoring visit to check that the actions detailed in the welfare requirement notice and the notice to improve, with a due date of 6 December 2013, had been met. Having considered all the evidence, it was found that the progress made in relation to these actions was good overall.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

On 18 February 2014, we carried out a further monitoring visit to check that the actions in relation to learning and development, with a due date of 6 January 2014, had been met. At the visit you informed the inspector that you had improved your understanding of the learning and development requirements by: attending training; gaining support from the local authority development worker, and self-development. As a result of this you now observe what children do, evaluate this information to assess if children are reaching expected milestones and identify the next steps. This ensures they make progress in their learning.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

You have an adequate selection of resources that children can independently access. This encourages them to make choices and promotes their independence. After reviewing your practice you plan to extend the range of toys you have to further promote children's learning in all areas.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Parents receive a written summary of their child's development between the age of two and three years. This ensures they have a clear picture of their child's development and how they can support their child's learning at home. The summary covers the prime areas of learning and identifies the next steps to be taken to help children make progress. You understand that the purpose of this summary is to help identify and address any developmental concerns. This means that you are meeting children's individual needs and supporting their learning.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

You have improved your knowledge of how to promote children's communication and language skills. Children are secure in your care and confidently interact with you and visitors to your home. Their language is promoted through singing songs, looking at book and listening to stories. Children are introduced to new words through general conversation and as you cover different topics. Children are encouraged to communicate their thoughts and ideas as you ask them questions. During snack time children recall the names of different fruits they have eaten and confidently say which their favourite is. This means that you are promoting children’s language and communication skills.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Progress made at the last inspection, with regard to the other actions that were set, was found to have been sustained.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement. Our Reference EY296011
