p.1

Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate

An Ofsted inspector, Kelly Eyre, monitored your provision on 17/02/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

As a result of our inspection on 21/11/2013, we sent you a notice to improve. The actions you were set are included at the end of this letter.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

During the monitoring visit the inspector talked with your nominated person and the nursery manager about the steps taken to address the actions raised in the notice to improve. She observed activities and staff interaction with children. The inspector also spoke to individual members of staff. She looked at action plans and self- evaluation information. The inspector also looked at children's assessment records and activity planning.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

The inspector found that you have appointed a new manager. She has worked in partnership with the nominated person to develop a practical action plan to support staff in prioritising and addressing the issues raised at the last inspection. There is also an appropriate process to evaluate daily practice at the nursery and the impact this has on children. This has further supported the manager and staff in looking at how to address the areas for improvement identified at inspection. The inspector noted that your manager's ongoing evaluation process helps to ensure that any improvements are sustainable and continue to improve the provision for children.

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

New planning and assessment procedures have been implemented and all staff have received one-to-one support to make sure that they understand how to use these. You have also provided staff with a practical 'planning pack' that explains the whole planning process. These changes mean that staff now make more effective use of their assessments of children in order to plan appropriate activities that help promote children's progress in each area of learning. Staff are also now more confident in their interactions with children and are able to extend children's play and learning Our Reference EY463752

p.1

Outcome of monitoring

The manager and nominated person have spent time demonstrating good practice to staff. They have also introduced additional procedures to support staff in identifying children's interests, needs and abilities and then feeding these into the daily planning. As a result, staff are now able to offer children activities and resources that are based on their individual needs and interests. This helps to ensure that children enjoy their time at the nursery and are offered suitably challenging play experiences.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Staff have been supported in carrying out progress checks at age two for children aged between two- and three-years old and there is a procedure in place to share these checks with the children's parents. This supports staff in working in partnership with parents to identify any areas where children require additional support and to plan their next developmental steps.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Staff demonstrate a positive approach to their work and the nursery has welcomed the support offered by their local authority. This has supported them in looking at how they communicate with children and they have developed prompt cards that support staff in using open-ended questions. This area has also been included in the planning of structured activities, where staff now look at key words and new vocabulary that can be introduced. As a result, children are encouraged to think further and their language and communication skills are appropriately promoted. Staff recognise that this is still new practice and requires the consistent implementation in order to develop it over time.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Children are now offered suitable opportunities to explore and develop their skills in creative and critical thinking. The manager and staff make sure that resources are accessible and that children have time to choose their own resources and determine their play. They have adapted the planning and daily routine to reflect this but have recognised that they still have further work to do in order to fully recognise these opportunities each day.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

The nursery manager and nominated person have adapted the daily routine so that children are now offered opportunities to go outside twice a day. They have aimed to make these outdoor opportunities meaningful to children. Therefore, they have worked with staff to ensure that they are based on children's current interests and needs. They have also embraced the support offered by their local authority and now make use of the 'Buggy Buddies' scheme in order to inform the planning of outdoor play. As a result, children are offered appropriate daily outdoor play and learning experiences.

p.2

Outcome of monitoring

Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the setting has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement. Our Reference EY463752
