Monitoring for provision judged as inadequate
An Ofsted inspector, Jan Linsdell, monitored your provision on 14/02/2014 following your inspection where the provision was judged to be inadequate.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
As a result of our inspection on 25/11/2013, we sent you a notice to improve. The actions you were set are included at the end of this letter.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
During the monitoring visit the inspector discussed with you the steps you have taken to address the actions raised in the notice to improve. She observed that children were safe, content and playing happily with the toys. She had a discussion with you about how you ensure children's safety. She also talked to you about your procedures for administering medication and your arrangements for observing and assessing children's learning. The inspector looked at your records relating to medication, risk assessment and children's attendance. She also reviewed children's development files and planning documentation.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have taken appropriate steps to ensure children's safety on the premises. For example, you have updated your risk assessment to include the hazards associated with the fireplace and the step leading to the kitchen. You have fitted a large fire guard that covers the fire and hearth, and secured it to the wall. This helps to minimise the risk of young children falling onto the hearth and hurting themselves. You recognise the hazard associated with younger children accessing the step down into the kitchen and, although your safety gate was not in place during the visit, you agreed to ensure that this is in place when very young children are present.
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
You understand the legal requirements for administering medication to children, which means children's health is appropriately safeguarded. You have made some effort to improve your procedures for recording written consent from parents and recording details of medication given. For example, you have created a new medication form for parents to complete. However, your records still lack some detail, such as, the specific name of the medication and the reason why it is required. You said that you intend to obtain documentation from the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years, in order to help you maintain a more Our Reference EY462352
p.1
Outcome of monitoring
The inspector found that you have consistently maintained an accurate daily record of the children's hours of attendance, which contributes to promoting their safety. You are starting to build appropriate partnerships with parents and others, such as, the children's teacher. For example, at their request, you are supporting children with their reading skills and their understanding of phonics. You are also starting to organise some activities which complement children's learning in school, such as, helping them to learn about the weather. Consequently, you are beginning to support children's future learning.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
You observe and assess younger children and plan suitable activities to meet their learning needs and help them make progress. You are starting to do this with children in reception class because you now understand that these children are still within the early years age range, therefore, you must continue to follow the Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage to promote their learning. Discussions indicate that you know these children well and you understand and support their learning needs adequately. However, you still have little evidence of their achievements to share with parents and this is something that you are continuing to work on. You are accessing support from your local authority and other local childminders and you have embarked on training towards a recognised early years qualification. This shows a suitable commitment to develop and improve your practice.
p.2
Outcome of monitoring
Having considered all the evidence, the inspector is of the opinion that the childminder has taken prompt and effective action to address the points for improvement.
