Brief description of the service
The children's home is provided by a local authority and it cares for up to six young people. It focuses on supporting young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties.
p.3
The inspection judgements and what they mean
Good progress The children’s home has demonstrated continued improvement in quality of care and outcomes for children and young people and where appropriate has addressed all requirements and the large majority of recommendations that were raised at the previous inspection. Satisfactory progress The children’s home has maintained quality of care and outcomes for children and young people and where appropriate has addressed all requirements and the majority of recommendations that were raised at the previous inspection. Inadequate progress The children’s home has failed to address one or more requirements and/or has not met the majority of recommendations and/or the quality of care and outcomes for children and young people have declined since the last full inspection.
p.3
Progress
Since their previous inspection the service is judged to be making good progress .
p.3
Progress
This service was subject to a full inspection in October 2012 and its overall effectiveness was judged to be good. It also achieved good judgements in outcomes for young people, the quality of care, safeguarding, and leadership and management.
p.3
Progress
At the last inspection one recommendation was made concerning the quality of individual risk assessments and the need to ensure that they fully address safeguarding concerns. This related specifically to young people’s vulnerability when they are missing from home. The home has taken action to comply and has clearly identified the risks and measures of control. This helps to protect young people from harm.
p.3
Progress
The staff have recently undertaken training provided by the Local Safeguarding Children Board in raising their awareness of child sexual exploitation. They have found this to be very informative and beneficial. It has enabled them to think more widely about safeguarding issues. This contributes to their overall understanding of their responsibilities to keep young people safe. Since the last inspection the home has had a number of new admissions. This had an unsettling effect and was accompanied by an increase in disruptive behaviour. There are signs that this is now diminishing as young people become familiar with routines, boundaries and expectations. Staff have implemented a programme of activities, ensuring that young people are making positive and constructive use of their time.
p.3
Progress
Despite the challenges, the home has continued to use de-escalation techniques to positive effect and has managed difficult behaviour without the need for physical restraint. The home’s approach assists young people to self-regulate their own behaviour over time.
p.4
Progress
A number of complaints have been received from neighbours about disruptive behaviour in the local community. The home’s manager and senior manager have worked hard to resolve the issues and re-establish cordial relationships. Young people have responded positively and taken time to write letters of apology. The home takes all complaints seriously and is proactive in taking remedial action.
p.4
Progress
In this period, the home has been subject to an increase in minor damage to walls, doors, and fixtures and fittings. This is repaired promptly in order that it does not detract from the overall attractive appearance of communal spaces. The home continues to provide young people with a homely environment.
p.4
Progress
Overall, the home continues to provide young people with good outcomes and quality of care. No statutory requirements or recommendations are made as a result of this inspection.
p.4
