Brief description of the service

A private company owns and operates this children's home. The setting accommodates a maximum of one young person of either sex between the ages of 10 and 17 years who have complex emotional, behavioural and educational difficulties. The company uses attachment therapeutic approaches in engaging young people. Where it is assessed that young people are not able to attend main stream schooling the company has the provision of a small specialist education unit and a working farm.

p.3

Satisfactory progress The children’s home has maintained quality of care and outcomes for children and young people and where appropriate has addressed all requirements and the majority of recommendations that were raised at the previous inspection. p.3

Progress

Young people continue to receive well planned care provided by a committed and competent staff team. Staff provide clear boundaries within a caring environment. The culture and practice within the home promotes individual identity, difference and equality. As a result, young people receive high quality care and support which is based on their individual identified needs. Young people have successfully moved on into supported living and are either attending further education or in employment.

p.3

Progress

Young people live in a safe and secure environment. Staff have excellent knowledge and understanding of what they must do to protect young people from the risk of harm while enabling them to take risks in a safe environment. High staffing levels and a strong knowledge about safety issues for individuals also ensures the safety and welfare of the young people.

p.3

Progress

The staff team are enthusiastic and well motivated because they are directed by an inspirational and pro-active manager and senior management. Together they contribute earnestly in providing consistent high standards of care to ensure that young people live their lives to the full.

p.4

Progress

Excellent systems are in place to monitor the quality of care in the home. Management and staff are well motivated in examining and improving practice. Since the previous inspection much work has been done to evaluate the quality assurance procedures and monitoring systems in respect of the level of service provided. For example, a developmental document has been produced for staff to record ideas with regards to meeting needs of young people, staff training, appraisals, and home maintenance. It includes details of what action is to be taken, by who, target date, completion date and manager signing off date.

p.4

Progress

Admission and discharge documents have been reviewed. They now provide clearer protocols for staff to follow with young people, detailing specific action points and completion dates. The young person's welcome/information booklet has been re- designed to provide a more user-friendly, personalised document.
