p.2

Introduction

This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.

p.3

Introduction

The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).

p.3

Introduction

The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B.

p.3

Introduction

There were no children on roll when this inspection took place. The findings in this report are based on evidence gathered from discussions with those who care for the children and an inspection of the premises, equipment and relevant documentation. Where there are no children on roll, no judgement is made on the quality of the early years provision as there is no reliable evidence on which to assess its impact on children. The report states if the provider continues to meet the requirements of registration.

p.3

Introduction

Please see our website for more information about each childcare provider. We publish inspection reports, conditions of registration and details of complaints we receive where we or the provider take action to meet the requirements of registration. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.3

Description of the childminding

The childminder was registered in 2007. She lives in the Atherstone area of Warwickshire with her husband and four children aged 12, seven, five and two years. The whole of the ground floor and upstairs bathroom are used for childminding. There is a fully enclosed garden available for outside play. The childminder is able to take and collect children from local schools and pre-schools.

p.4

Description of the childminding

The childminder is registered to care for three children under eight years at any one time, two of whom may be in the early years age group. She also offers care to children aged over five years. She is registered on the Early Years Register and on both the voluntary and compulsory parts of the Childcare Register. She is a member of the National Childminding Association. At the time of the inspection there were no children on roll in the early years age group.

p.4

The overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The childminder demonstrates through discussion and the documentation available her understanding of the learning and development requirements and how to support children in making progress towards the early learning goals. She plans for individual children's needs and completes observational assessments to identify their next steps. Discussion with parents enables her to gain an insight into their child's needs, preferences and development. The designated play room has a wide range of easily accessible resources to provide appropriate challenge and maintain children's interest.

p.4

The overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The childminder has a sound knowledge of child protection procedures approved by the Local Safeguarding Children Board. She fully understands her responsibility to protect children from harm. The recommendation raised at the previous inspection to develop a better knowledge of signs of abuse has been addressed through attending training. Her child protection policy is shared with parents at the onset of care. The childminder's home is safe and secure and risk assessments including visual checks each day are completed. Most welfare requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage are met. However, the childminder failed to notify Ofsted of the birth of a child. It is a legal requirement to do so. On this occasion Ofsted does not intend to take further action.

p.4

The overall effectiveness of the early years provision

Partnerships with parents and carers are built through good communication and the sharing of information, policies and procedures. She is aware of the benefits of establishing and maintaining positive links with other early years professionals to ensure coherence of learning as well as care. A written policy relating to equality of opportunity is in place and promotes a fully inclusive environment. Children are encouraged to develop an understanding of others as they have access to dolls, books and role-play resources which reflect our diverse world.

p.4

The overall effectiveness of the early years provision

The childminder is developing her understanding of the benefits of self-evaluation as a way of assessing the strengths and weaknesses of her provision. She is beginning to gain the views of parents and is willing to undertake training to keep up to date with current practice. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006

p.4
