Type of setting Childminder This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
p.1
Introduction
This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.
p.2
Introduction
The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).
p.2
Introduction
The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
p.2
Description of the childminding
The childminder was registered in 2007. She lives with her husband and three children aged two, six and eight years in a terraced property in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Areas of the home used for the children include the whole of the downstairs and the small bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. There is a garden for outdoor play.
p.3
Description of the childminding
The childminder is registered to care for a maximum of three children at any one time. At present she has one child in the early years range and two children who are aged over eight years on roll. The provision is registered on the Early Years Register and the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register. The childminder is a member of the National Childminding Association.
p.3
Overall effectiveness of the early years provision
Overall the quality of the provision is satisfactory. The childminder promotes children's learning and development requirements appropriately and, as a result, children are making suitable progress. Children's welfare is mostly promoted; however, the record of risk assessments does not include all aspects of the setting and children's safety is therefore compromised. Partnership with parents is satisfactory. The childminder has systems in place to evaluate the provision offered and has identified ways to improve it. Required records, policies and procedures are in place. The learning environment is well used and is resourced adequately. Overall, an inclusive and welcoming service is provided.

further develop the record of risk assessment to include all areas of the home and any outings undertaken (Documentation) (also applies to both parts of the Childcare Register). 04/09/2009 This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
p.3
provision
The childminder has attended training about the Early Years Foundation Stage and is qualified to administer first aid. The childminder is in the process of completing a self-evaluation of her setting and has identified areas for further improvement. She demonstrates that she has the capacity to make any necessary improvements; for example, recommendations raised at the last inspection have been mostly carried out.
p.4
provision
The childminder works in partnership with parents as she communicates with them as they drop off and collect their children. They share what they know about their child when they start and ongoing discussions support children's learning and development. The childminder also seeks parents' views through questionnaires and has effective systems in place to deal with any concerns raised. The childminder is developing relationships with other providers of care and education.
p.4
provision
The childminder has developed records, policies and procedures to ensure the needs of children are met. These are maintained satisfactorily and include details of children's individual needs such as dietary needs. This helps the childminder promote children's well being. The childminder is able to communicate in Urdu as well as English so supports both parents' and children's cultural needs. Steps taken to promote children's good health and well-being include regular fresh air and exercise and home-cooked meals. The childminder has a suitable policy in place to prevent the spread of infection as children who have an infectious illness are not cared for.
p.4
provision
The childminder understands about safeguarding children and has a suitable child protection policy in place. Children are beginning to develop an understanding of how to keep themselves safe; for example, they are learning about crossing roads safely. However, the record of risk assessments does not include all areas of the premises used by children and all outings undertaken. This compromises children's safety. The fire evacuation procedure is practised so children are familiar with it; however, it does not cover the use of the first floor and it is unclear how to evacuate from this area in an emergency. The organisation of resources allows children to self-select from a range of equipment. Children do not have access to the full range so are unable to make effective choices about their play. Additional equipment is obtained by the childminder from the first floor when needed. Space used by the children is suitable.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
The childminder has a satisfactory understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Both planned and unplanned activities are arranged to meet children's interests. The childminder has developed adequate children's observation record files. Links to the early learning goals and children's next steps in learning are not easily identified by the childminder and, as a result, it is not clear if all areas of learning are covered. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 Children are encouraged to develop good learning habits. For example, children are encouraged to share toys and resources with each other. They are learning about the world around them both locally and further away through activities such as celebrating different festivals, like Easter and Holi. The childminder has some methods of managing behaviour that are not in line with current good practice,

which she is to revise. Boundaries for children are set which are appropriate and they know what type of behaviour is acceptable. Children show good independence as they use the bathroom on their own and play well on their own.
p.5
The quality and standards of the early years provision
The childminder supports children's care and learning well. She interacts with them, making suggestions such as encouraging them to write their name on a drawing. Children respond well to her and approach her with confidence. They ask if they can play on the computer and the childminder supports their choices as she helps them set it up and looks for age-appropriate programmes for them to take part in. Children are competent at using equipment, such as a computer mouse, as well as larger equipment such as bikes.
p.5
The quality and standards of the early years provision
Children take part in activities that develop their creative thinking such as making music. They make cards for Mother's Day and take part in role play activities. The childminder develops children's mathematical thinking further when on outings to the park. She encourages children to look at the seesaw to see which side is heavier than the other. Children look at food from around the world, such as a coconut. They felt the outside, shook it and listened; they then made a hole in the shell to let out the milk, which they then tasted, and then broke the coconut shell to release the flesh, which they also tasted. This activity was enjoyed by the children. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
