p.1
Introduction
This inspection was carried out by Ofsted under Sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 on the quality and standards of the registered early years provision. ‘Early years provision’ refers to provision regulated by Ofsted for children from birth to 31 August following their fifth birthday (the early years age group). The registered person must ensure that this provision complies with the statutory framework for children’s learning, development and welfare, known as the Early Years Foundation Stage.
p.2
Introduction
The provider must provide a copy of this report to all parents with children at the setting where reasonably practicable. The provider must provide a copy of the report to any other person who asks for one, but may charge a fee for this service (The Childcare (Inspection) Regulations 2008 regulations 9 and 10).
p.2
Introduction
The setting also makes provision for children older than the early years age group which is registered on the voluntary and/or compulsory part(s) of the Childcare Register. This report does not include an evaluation of that provision, but a comment about compliance with the requirements of the Childcare Register is included in Annex B. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
p.2
Description of the childminding
The childminder has been registered since 2005. She is registered on the Early Years Register and both the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register. The childminder is registered to provide care for four children under-eight at any-one time. There is currently one child on roll in the early years age group who attends on a part-time basis. The childminder is also registered to provide overnight care for one child under eight.
p.3
Description of the childminding
The childminder lives with her husband and three children in Woodley near Reading. The whole house is used for childminding. There is an enclosed garden for outdoor play. The family have two pet cats.
p.3
Description of the childminding
Local facilities are within walking and a short driving distance, such as, parks, schools and shops. The childminder is able to take and collect children from local schools and pre-schools.
p.3
Overall effectiveness of the early years provision
Overall the quality of the provision is satisfactory. The childminder is developing her understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The childminder is aware of promoting children's safety, although there is no written risk assessment in place to ensure all hazards are minimised to children. The childminder demonstrates a suitable understanding of safeguarding children's welfare. Good partnerships with parents and other settings are in place. Children benefit from feeling secure and included with the childminder.

provision
Most aspects of health and hygiene are suitable to promote children's well being. The childminder supervises children closely. This reduces the risks to children. Appropriate safety equipment promotes children's safety inside the home, such as safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. The childminder has not completed a written risk assessment to ensure all potential hazards to children are recognised and reduced. The decking style fencing around the swimming pool poses a potential risk to children.
p.4
provision
The childminder has undertaken some further training to support her practice. The childminder demonstrates a sound understanding of her responsibilities to safeguard children's welfare and the procedures to follow in the event of concerns arising. The childminder has some written policies and procedures in place. Parents receive a copy of the policies and procedures. This ensures they have a clear understanding of the service on offer. However, a very small number of the policies lack sufficient detail or up to date information.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
Children are very happy and settled with the childminder. They enjoy good relationships with her and other members of her family. The childminder gains good information from parents about children's needs. Good communication is in place between the childminder, parents and other settings. This promotes consistent outcomes for children.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
The childminder interacts well with the children. The childminder extends children's knowledge and understanding through asking appropriate questions, for example, as she reads a book to the children she asks them to find different pictures and to count the things they see. This supports their language development and encourages their observation and counting skills.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
Children are able to make their own choices and decisions from the good range of resources on offer. This enables children to initiate their own play and ideas, supporting their independent skills. Children enjoy outings in the local area, such as, trips on the bus. This develops children's understanding of their local environment. Children's physical skills benefit from regular visits to the park and the childminder has a range of physical play equipment in the garden. This supports children's coordination, for example, as they play bat and ball.
p.4
The quality and standards of the early years provision
The childminder maintains records of children's progress. These contain photographs and some short written observations. The observations lack sufficient evaluation to support planning for children's next steps of learning. The childminder demonstrates a suitable understanding of how the activities she provides support children’s learning and development. However, the childminders This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006 knowledge and understanding of the early learning goals and EYFS do not fully support assessment and planning for the individual children. This inspection was carried out under sections 49 and 50 of the Childcare Act 2006
